On the road to evolution discovery

The Adelaide Film Festival will kick off in mid-October with a rich line-up, including an oration by Flinders University Professor John Long who will share his adventures traversing Australia by motorbike to film a series about the evolution of life.

As part of his talk, Professor Long will screen the three-minute trailer for his documentary on motorcycles and evolution, which was partly filmed at Flinders University using its industry-standard screen production facilities.

With a career spanning four decades, Professor Long has searched for fossils across the globe. His discoveries have provided insights into evolution including the original sexual revolution – when internal fertilisation evolved so creatures could invade land.

Earlier this year Professor Long was awarded the annual Jim Bettison and Helen James Award by the Adelaide Film Festival, which recognises high achieving Australians whose exemplary life-long work has benefited the wider Australian community. As part of this honour, Professor Long is delivering the Bettison & James Oration at this year’s festival.

His talks, Life Finds a Way – Sex, Death and Evolution, will take place on Saturday 24 October at 1:30pm.

This is a free public event at the Palace Nova Eastend Cinema, and tickets will book out quickly so early registration is recommended.
