Succeeding one step at a time

Results from the 2020 BUPA Team Challenge are in, and the combined results from all Flinders University participants recorded an impressive 25,438,570 total steps that equates to a total distance of 19,079 km. This milestone represented a solid commitment with 11,910 average daily steps.

First Place Team within the Flinders challengers was KatKat Lanren & Co from the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, with team members Lanie McDowall, Lauren Lines, Kate Sieber, Kathryn Galloway and Courtney Roe recording 2,324,082 steps.

Most Steps Overall was recorded by Lauren Lines from the KatKat Lanren & Co team, who posted a massive 772,003 steps.

Second Place Team was Flinders Fillies, with team members Julie Magee, Martina Varga, Jill Smith, Kim Fiore and Jenny Curtis recording 2,118,748 Steps

Third Place Team was Step Counters, with team members Verity Hayman, Sarah Taylor, Toni Mann, Jo Moran and Shelley Pirakis recording 2,019,830 steps.

In the competitive inter-department challenge, the College of Business, Government and Law emerged victorious with 10,863 average daily steps, ahead of Nursing and Health Sciences (10,101 average daily steps), Portfolios (8,753 steps) and Science and Engineering (6,822 steps).

Jill Smith from the Flinders Fillies team won the Wellness Warrior award. Team-mate Jenny Curtis praised her for having “an incredibly positive attitude towards personal well-being and fitness, and encouraged all colleagues to embrace the BUPA Challenge. Jill is a true example of showing people what you can achieve through your personal choice to take control of your personal well-being”.

There were also a series of mini-challenge winners. Francisco Dullona of Team Spongebob Slowpants, hailing from the College of Business Government and Law, cleared the 10,000-step goal on Friday Frenzy.

Team Gone with The Win, comprising Salvo Motta, Alex Mudd, Michelle Whittle, Sarah Hunter and Jodie Waite, won the team photo competition.

John Roddick of Team Out & About from the College of Science and Engineering, Tonsley campus, won recognition for clearing the 15,000-step goal on Super Saturday.

The Sleep Week challenge was won by Brad Vowles of Team Research This from portfolios, main campus.
