Inaugural celebration for student vets

The Flinders University Australian Student Veteran Association (ASVA) held its inaugural Remembrance Day ceremony last week, on Wednesday 11 November.

The ceremony was held at the flags outside the Registry building. ASVA chair Chris Turner and treasurer Liz McNeill were joined by Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Clare Pollock, Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah West, Associate Professor Ben Wadham, Associate Professor Pablo Munguia, current Military Academic Pathway Program participants, and stakeholders in the program including Alex Hoskin, Crossfit coach at Flinders Sport and Fitness.

A wreath was laid when the flags were lowered for the minute silence, following a reading of the poems In Flanders Fields by John McCrae and The Ode – the fourth stanza of the poem For the Fallen by Laurence Binyon, which has been used in commemorative services since the early 1920s. Guests gathered in the Tavern after the ceremony.

The Ode

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
