International Baccalaureate boost at Flinders

Flinders University – one of the first universities in the world to offer International Baccalaureate-recognised postgraduate programs in both education and leadership – will be presenting a five-day intensive IB Professional Development course during South Australia’s school holidays in April.

South Australia has a strong uptake of IB – 38 schools, including 8 Education Department schools – which represents thousands of students and hundreds of teachers, and with its strong focus on international mindedness, collaboration and inquiry, IB is positioned as embracing a very current approach to education.

The Professional Development course – Induction to International Baccalaureate (IB) Education will be held at Flinders University’s Bedford Park campus from 12-16 April. Cost for the course is $1200, although discounts are available, along with more fee information posted online.

This course would suit: Teachers who are new to a school with an established IB program, teachers at schools planning to introduce the IB program – and anyone involved in education seeking to develop a deeper understanding of IB philosophy, principles and practices.

Flinders is the only university in SA and one of only 6 in Australia to offer postgrad courses which qualify teachers for the IB Certificates in Teaching and Learning and the IB Certificates in Leadership (Practice and Research).

The IB short course is also the very first short course from Education at Flinders – and it signals the start of other developments including the inclusion of IB electives in the new Bachelor of Education degrees that will commence in 2022. With IBO recognition for these new courses and the inclusion of IB in the Initial Teacher Education degrees, Flinders graduates who elect to do the IB topics can also qualify for the IB Certificate of Teaching and Learning, which will give them a significant advantage in applying to teach in any of the 5000 IB World schools.
