Inaugural cross-college research grants

The inaugural Flinders University Cross-College Research Grants (CCRG) represent a new research funding scheme that involves collaboration between all six colleges to fund projects drawing on the expertise of researchers from different parts of the University.

The CCRG scheme has been established to promote teamwork across colleges and support research performance at Flinders. The grants are intended to support research likely to lead to ERA eligible top-quality publications or external grant applications.

Built from an idea presented by Professor Gerry Redmond, Dean of Research in the College of Business, Government and Law, the terms for the new grants were negotiated with all College Deans of Research, with approval from DVCR.

Each participating college contributed up to $5,000 per project, with 7 awardees announced in the inaugural round of funding:

  •  Leah Couzner (EPSW) with Christine Mpundu-Kaambwa (NHS) and Monica Cations (EPSW) researching “Preferences for care and support services for people with young-onset dementia and their support persons”.
  • Marta Gabryelska (MPH) with Ula Alexander (SE) researching “Ultrafast UV laser Psoralen crosslinking for accelerating RNA interactomics – new research tools”.
  • Zhongfan Jia (SE) with Reinu Abraham (MPH) working to “Develop high value-added biomaterials from marine biomass”.
  • Mallika Senthil (NHS) with Jamie Craig (MPH), Emmanuelle Souzeau (MPH) and Lachlan Wheelhouse Knight (MPH), examining “Development of a patient-reported outcome measure for childhood glaucoma”.
  • Cassandra Star (BGL), with Peter Tagney (HASS), Beverley Clarke (HASS) and Sabine Dittman (SE) on “Evaluating the research needs of the SA Department for Environment and Water’s (DEW) Adaptation Action Plan 2021–2025”.
  • Jacqueline Stephens (MPH) with Trent Lewis (SE) and Eng Ooi (MPH) researching “Towards the Development of a Machine Learning Algorithm to Improve Diagnosis of Otitis Media”.
  • Ben Wadham (EPSW) with Daryl Wesley (HASS) researching “Recovery through Discovery: Veteran Transition, Education, Employment”.

Promoted through Research Link as well as in individual colleges, this strong endeavour has fostered excellent relationship building and collaboration between the colleges.
