Free resource to help upskill end-of-life care

End-of-Life Essentials (EOLE) is a Commonwealth-funded project being led by Flinders University which provides free education for hospital health professionals to help upskill staff in end-of-life care.

People at the end of life may fear the thought of uncontrolled pain, the unknown, or lacking control, adding sorrow to their last months or years of life – so EOLE’s newly released States of Minds online education modules has resources to help health care professionals provide more encompassing care to a patient at the end-of-life.

The education modules are designed to assist doctors, nurses and allied health professionals working in acute hospitals in delivering end-of-life care. They are free to use and can be accessed online from anywhere in Australia.

There are now 13 End-of-Life Essentials modules available, covering such topics as:

• Awareness and open discussions of death
• Who is particularly vulnerable at the end-of-life
• Anxiety
• Depression

The End-of-Life Essentials Project Team comprises Associate Professor Kim Devery (Project Lead and Academic Lead, Palliative and Supportive Services, Flinders University), Deb Rawlings (Co-Lead, senior lecturer, course coordinator and researcher in palliative care at Flinders University), project manager Vanessa Heading, marketing and communications coordinator Jane Durbridge, research officers Dr Huahua Yin and Megan Winsall – and Professor Jennifer Tieman works closely with the End-of-Life Essentials Project Team in her role as CareSearch Director.
