Documentary explores our French connections

In a timely national screening that coincides with Bastille Day, the historical documentary that Flinders University’s Dr Danielle Clode and Dr Christele Maizonniaux co-produced – French Voyages of Discovery to Australia – will be featured on SBS-TV at 2pm on Wednesday 14 July (and SBSOnDemand).

The documentary has been selected as part of the Scinema International Film Festival 2021 screening in August.

It poses the question “Could Australia ever have been French?” by examining France’s unwavering commitment to research and discovery in the Pacific region and in Australia in the late 18th and early 19th century.

It will also be available for FREE community screenings as part of National Science Week (register here: https://scinema.org.au/). In the meantime, you can view the trailer for the documentary here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJfnL7DvA5M&t=1s

A French language version of the documentary will be screened in the future.

This same idea has also been explored on a recent version of ABC Radio National’s The Science Show with Robyn Williams, where Flinders University’s Professor Rob Morrison (famed for presenting The Curiosity Show on TV)  talks about how Kangaroo Island was nearly a French colony.
