Law students awarded Len King Scholarship

Two Flinders University students are among the recipients of the Dunstan Foundation Len King Scholarships for 2021.

Named in honour of the former Chief Justice of South Australia, The Hon Len King AC QC, the award is designed to help worthy candidates with a passion for social justice pursue a career in law.

This year’s Flinders University recipients are Samantha Thomas and Molly Sloan, alongside Annalise Delic and Uyen Lam from the University of Adelaide. Each will receive up to $15,000 a year for up to four years while they study, to assist with general living costs.

Awarded by the Don Dunstan Foundation, in conjunction with the University of Adelaide and Flinders University, the award has now supported 15 students in their law studies since it was established in 2014.

Chair of the Don Dunstan Foundation Dr Jane Lomax-Smith congratulated the students on their achievement.

“Len King Scholars are chosen based on outstanding academic potential, and their commitment in promoting and facilitating social justice.”

“The Foundation is proud to support students who, along with outstanding professional and personal qualities, seek to follow in the footsteps of Len King, and of course, Don Dunstan, in seeking to create a fairer world. We look forward to following their contributions to our community in the future.”

Flinders University’s Interim Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Students) Professor Deborah West said the university was proud to be a partner in supporting students and providing them with the opportunity to fight for social justice and make a positive change in the world.

“The support provided by the Len King Scholarship gives socially-minded law students the best chance to reach their full academic potential before embarking on their careers,” said Professor West.

“At Flinders, we set out to empower graduates to tackle real-world problems and make a real difference in our community, and I think these students will do just that. I want to congratulate all the scholars on this wonderful academic achievement.”

Flinders University recipient Samantha Thomas is studying a Bachelor of Laws and Legal Practice and says her overall career objective and aspiration is to help people and give back to her community.

“I hope to be able to use my Law degree to do this and achieve my goal. The Len King Scholarship is so important to me as it allowed me the chance to accept my placement at the Legal Services Commission.”

Recipient Molly Sloan is also studying a Bachelor of Laws and Legal Practice at Flinders University and says the scholarship has given her more opportunities to achieve her academic and career goals.

“I now have more time and resources with which to broaden my learning and further my studies. Greater access to support services and extra-curricular activities, means I can also prioritise my wellbeing and skill development.”

The scholarship was also awarded to University of Adelaide student Uyen Lam, who is studying a Bachelor of Laws and Accounting, and Annalise Delic, who is studying a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts at the University of Adelaide.
