It is time for Fearless Conversations

Flinders University is fearless in pursuing the knowledge, discoveries and innovations that will help shape the future of South Australia and solve some of the greatest challenges of modern times. Fearless Conversations about this begin online tomorrow.

From COVID-19 to climate change, we are doing the research that needs to be done to find the solutions that we need – but we know that progress and success is rarely achieved in isolation.

Fearless Conversations is a live panel series that will bring together thought leaders to explore some of the major challenges we face and to push the boundaries as individuals and as a society.

Flinders researchers and industry leaders will come together in weekly roundtable discussions to share their thoughts, opinions and ideas, encouraging broad thinking on how we can best prepare for a rapidly changing future. These fearless conversations will cover issues that matter to us all and explore the solutions we need to hear about.

Sport will be in the spotlight for the first Fearless Conversation, as experts discuss how sports will help rebuild South Australian communities in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Join Dr Sam Elliott from the College of Education, Psychology and Social Work, along with Netball SA chief executive officer Bronwyn Klei, Port Adelaide Football Club boss Matthew Richardson and Adelaide Oval chief Andrew Daniels as they dissect challenges such as how to progress women’s sport and what we have learnt from the Taylor Walker racism scandal. The Advertiser journalist Andrew Capel will host the session.

Visit the Flinders University website, The Advertiser homepage or Facebook page at 10.30am on Wednesday 25 August to be part of this Fearless Conversation.

Dr Elliott says he is excited by the opportunity to enhance the social, psychological and developmental dimensions of community sport through collaborating with industry and the community.

“I’m excited by the Fearless Conversations concept. For too long our sport industry has yearned for simple solutions to complex and dynamic social challenges in sport. From optimising parental behaviour in youth sport, to addressing the volunteer shortfall, to improving participation and retention outcomes in sport, it’s time to embrace research innovation and theoretically informed solutions to arrest the challenges that have pervaded community sport for generations,” says Dr Elliott.

“I’m hoping to challenge the rigid, siloed ways that we think about and operationalise organised, community sport. In doing so, I hope to move sport leaders towards a systemic and interdisciplinary understanding of the parents, siblings, peers, coaches, organisations, communities and societies that surround individual sport experiences.

“I am really looking forward to entering a broader public discussion about the future of sport in South Australia. Hopefully our fearless conversations will inspire daring and courageous change in community sport with immediacy.”

Join us as we embark on this exciting next chapter together – by being Fearless.
