Helping first-year students transition to uni

The transition to university can be difficult for many first-year students, as they adapt to new ways of learning – but there are strong support mechanisms in place that can help teachers to ease the journey along this path.

If you teach or support first-year students, it would be smart to check out the First Year Community of Practice, a Flinders University group that comes together to discuss and share best solutions to help support these students.

The First Year Community of Practice began in 2009 and offers a place for you to discuss ideas about supporting first-year students to successfully transition to and through university. This year, sessions will focus on staff and student wellbeing.

Beginning in March, meetings will be held monthly on different days and times to accommodate everyone’s busy schedules. All meetings will be run both in person and online via Teams. The Teams channel will also allow for communication and knowledge exchange, so you can be involved with the group even if you are unable to attend a meeting.

If you are interested in getting involved, or would like to come along and hear what others have to say, please email group coordinators Lauren Sullivan or Ann Luzeckyj for more details.
