Small town tour in the spotlight

The Flinders Institute for Mental Health and Wellbeing is supporting Country Arts SA’s presentation of Euphoria through regional and remote SA during August – with the acclaimed play having been made into a film to help reach a wider audience.

The play, which went on tour last year after a sold-out season at the Space Theatre in Adelaide, brings to life real stories and experiences of regional people, dealing with the joys and challenges of living in a country town.

Country Arts SA’s arts and health creative producer Alison Howard says many regional communities face barriers and issues associated with geographical isolation, not least in accessing performing arts.

“The filming of Euphoria is significant and will ensure audiences in rural and remote towns that wouldn’t have got to see the live production last year can now experience this unique story,” she says.

“Feedback from regional communities in 2021 was overwhelmingly positive and audiences were delighted at the authenticity of the fictional country town depicted and its recognisable, colourful characters.

“Audiences commented on the importance of stories that shine a light on mental illness and provide a platform for conversation in regional communities.”

Matthew Flinders Distinguished Professor of Psychology Tracey Wade

Matthew Flinders Distinguished Professor Tracey Wade, Director of the Flinders Institute, will support the initiative by conducting research into this model of delivery to regional audiences.

Professor Wade will work with leading mental health practitioner Tracey Wanganeen, an inaugural member of the State Premier’s Suicide Prevention Council, who will travel with the film tour to answer questions arising from discussions following the screening.

The research will evaluate the mental health messaging and impact of the screening and the facilitated audience discussion sessions.

Euphoria, which features several Flinders University drama program graduates, will be screened at the American River Community Hall, Kangaroo Island, on 1 August, and then continue with further screenings in Kingscote, Sedan, Mannum, Nildottie, Swan Reach, Pinnaroo, Loxton, Waikerie, Robertstown, Roxby Downs and Andamooka. Admission is free but bookings must be made online.
