New Flinders topics to focus on space

As an Adelaide engineer prepares to become Australia’s first female astronaut, Flinders University is launching two new topics to drive careers in the growing space exploration industry.

Dr Kathryn Robison Hasani and Dr Stacey Henderson have spearheaded an innovative new suite of space governance topics that enable students to explore the business, policy, legal and criminal issues that might arise from the exploration and human activities in outer space. These subjects are:

Outer Space Governance: Business, Policy, Law & Crime, which will provide an overview of the history and current landscape of the space governance environment, including space law and policy. This topic will teach students how to tackle complex problems in space through project-based learning. The first half of the semester is focused on classroom-based learning, while the second half is project-based learning with industry partners in the space sector.

International Space Law and Governance, which is a postgraduate topic that recognises society is at a key moment in history – both nationally and internationally – due to the expansion of human activity in outer space, and the subsequent legal and governance issues this introduces. This topic provides a critical overview of the legal and governance issues that arise in the context of space activities.
