Flinders experts explain megafauna on TV

The ABC Catalyst team has enlisted the help of Flinders Palaeontology experts to prepare a major new documentary series on Australia’s extinct giant megafauna that commences on ABC-TV tonight.

Australia was once home to a group of extraordinary animals known as Megafauna – giants that lived here for millions of years, but in a blink of time, they disappeared. What became of them has been debated for over a century, but now a team of scientists that includes Dr Phoebe McInerney, Dr Aaron Camens and Associate Professor Trevor Worthy from the Flinders Palaeontology laboratory are re-opening this paleolithic cold case.

The two-part series – Megafauna: What Killed Australia’s Giants?, narrated by Australia’s screen superstar Hugh Jackman – is being broadcast on ABC-TV, with Part One screening at 8pm tonight ( Tuesday 25 June) and Part Two at 8pm on Tuesday 2 July. If you prefer to go online, you’ll be able to binge both episodes on ABC Iview from 25 June.

Dr McInerney also features in a preview video from the show, which you can watch here and here.

The ABC Catalyst team is featuring stories on specific items from the Megafauna TV series on the ABC News website, starting with an examination of Australia’s extinct giant kangaroos.
