On Wednesday 21 August, Flinders University Student Association (FUSA), Student Council and First Nations Student leaders are hosting a 24-hour fire at the Yungkurrinthi Inparrila Cultural Gathering Space to acknowledge student NAIDOC Week and Flinders’ ongoing commitment to Reconciliation.
All staff and students are invited to Yungkurrinthi Inparrila for the official lighting of the fire at 10.30am, where they can hear from guest speakers, take part in free activities and join in opportunities for a good yarn, which will continue throughout the day. As we honour this symbolic eternal flame, we kindle the sparks of pride and unity for our Country.
This will be a full 24-hour event so you can watch over the fire day or night, and enjoy free activities, live performances and food provided throughout. The wider community is welcome to join, so bring your friends and family to engage and take part in this time of reflection, sharing, conversation and togetherness.
Leadership for this event was spearheaded by current and previous FUSA First Nations Students Officer, SJ Salmon and Nadia Metzger.
On the event, Nadia shared, “’Keep the Fire Burning’ is not only this year’s theme for NAIDOC; it is a statement and promise to ourselves and our community that we are still here, still strong and still together. This vigil is a testament to that, and the more people come, the brighter the flame will glow.”
As this is a student-led initiative, we encourage all staff and students to show their support and stop by at some point during the 24-hours.
Keep an eye on the FUSA Instagram for more details.
