Students have access to Copilot

We are excited to announce that Microsoft Copilot with Enterprise Data Protection (EDP) has now been activated for all students (18+) at Flinders University. Without compromising on data privacy, this powerful AI tool is designed to enhance student’s productivity and creativity.

Why Copilot with Enterprise Data Protection?

Copilot is the AI chat solution approved by Flinders University as it combines the power of GPT-4 with enterprise-level data protection from Microsoft. When students sign into Copilot using their Flinders login details, all conversations are private and anonymous. They are not stored or used for chat model training. This ensures students can safely use Copilot with confidential data unlike the free AI tools in the web.

“As we all keep learning the ways in which AI can help us study and work more efficiently, it’s really great to have access to a tool that can be recommended by the university, particularly so that we can know a little bit more about where data is actually going.” says Nathan Harrison, a PhD Student from the College of Medicine and Public Health at Flinders University.

How to access Copilot

  1. Go to Copilot (Microsoft Edge is preferred, but Chrome works too) – https://copilot.microsoft.com
  2. Select ‘Sign in’ on the top right corner of the browser and log in with your Flinders University credentials.
  3. Once logged in, you will have full access to the data protection benefits.
  4. Look for the shield icon next to the ‘New Chat’ button (top right) to ensure your data is protected.
  5. Start using Copilot by typing in the chat box. You can ask questions, request information, generate content, or chat with Copilot.

Student support

The Good Practice Guide: Designing Assessment for Artificial Intelligence and Academic Integrity provides an AI Scale where academics are requested to communicate to students the type and nature of GenAI they can use for each specific assessment. We suggest that you recommend Copilot with EDP rather than other less secure tools.

Students seeking assistance can be directed to the Student Learning Support Services.

Important reminder: As with any tool available at Flinders University, please be aware of relevant policies that govern the content you are using or creating through using Copilot. You can review these policies on the Flinders University Policy Library website.

Students using GenAI are strongly encouraged to understand university expectations. For more information, follow the resources below.

We look forward to seeing how Copilot with Enterprise Data Protection will enhance the learning experience for all students at Flinders University.
