A respectful and safe campus

Flinders University is committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for all – and the College of Nursing and Health Sciences are leading the charge in ensuring our students have the tools and knowledge they need. The Safety and Respect event, held last week at Sturt, gave students important information for areas such as sexual harassment and assault, fostering a culture of respect and consent in relationships, and the importance of diversity and inclusion.

Students engaged with stalls focusing on respectful relationships and safe sex

The Safety and Respect event, held every semester down at Sturt, aims to raise awareness of sexual assault and sexual harrassment, and to help students identify and encourage respectful relationships. For the first time, the event was a collaboration between the Respect.Now.Always NHS Working Group, co-chaired by Dr Rowaida Sleem and Dr Hila Dafny, and the Be a Better Human campaign, and featured stalls from a range of organisations in the sexual safety and respect space, including SHINE SA, who promoted safer sex by providing students with free condoms. With information booths, and interactive craft stalls, the event was popular with students and staff alike.

“The campaign aims to put the spotlight on sexual assault and sexual harrassment. Everyone deserves a respectful and safe campus culture where consent, empathy and respect are valued,” said Dr Dafny.
