The Flinders University Library recently unveiled Journey into the Heart of Knowledge, a striking new artwork by Lawson ‘Wukawe’ Dodd — a proud Kaurna, Narungga, and Ngarrindjeri man, multidisciplinary artist, and Flinders University alumnus.
Held in the Plaza, the event opened with a Smoking Ceremony led by Cliffy ‘Tangku Munaitya’ Wilson, a proud Kaurna, Narungga, Ngarrindjeri, Ngadjuri, and Arrente man. The gathering brought together students, staff, and community members in a shared moment of cultural respect and reflection.

The centrepiece of the event, Journey into the Heart of Knowledge, is more than a visual statement. Through bold lines, symbolic shapes, and vibrant colour, the artwork captures the student journey — one of exploration, growth, and knowledge. It speaks to the personal and collective discovery that education can inspire.
In conversation with Director of Library Services Prashant Pandey, Dodd shared insights into the creative process and how his experience as a Flinders student shaped the work.

“This artwork reflects my journey through education and identity,” said Dodd. “It was a privilege to bring that story back to Flinders.”
The impact of Journey into the Heart of Knowledge continues to grow beyond the Library. Lawson was recently approached by the marketing team at Festival Tower on North Terrace to be part of a NAIDOC Week display. Given the Tower’s strong connection with Flinders University, they welcomed the idea of showcasing the work of a Flinders alumnus. As a result, Lawson’s artwork — originally commissioned by the Library — will also be on display as part of the Tower’s celebration of First Nations culture and creativity.
Now installed on Level 1 of the Central Library at Bedford Park, the artwork welcomes students, staff, and visitors as they begin their own journeys into research and learning. It also forms part of the Library’s broader cultural visibility and engagement strategy — a commitment to creating more inclusive, welcoming, and culturally respectful spaces.
A lasting reminder of the power of art to honour culture, spark reflection, and foster connection, Journey into the Heart of Knowledge invites all who pass through the Library to pause, reflect, and learn.
