Flinders University Senior Elders on Campus – Uncle Richard ‘Balang/Japaljarri’ Fejo, a Larrakia Elder based in Darwin, Uncle Lewis Yerloburka O’Brien, Kaurna Elder and Aunty Pat Miller, Arrernte Elder based at Alice Springs – will be sharing their insight and wisdom in the latest Elders Forum, Leadership – From the Elders’ Perspective.

The session will take place on Tuesday 12 October at the Alere Function Centre from 9.30am.

Uncle Richie says that leadership can take time and effort, but the benefits are well worth it.

“Leadership is a gift, not everyone has it but with a bit of patience, understanding and a willingness to learn, everyone can have it,” he says.

This event is hosted by Office of Indigenous Strategy and Engagement and Poche SA +NT and will be facilitated by Associate Professor Simone Tur, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous), and Associate Professor Maree Meredith, Director Poche SA + NT.

“Indigenous Elders have a deep responsibility for Country and community,” says Associate Professor Tur. “Leadership by Elders is grounded in cultural authority and responsibility for inter-generational transmission of Aboriginal ways of knowing, being and doing. Elders teach us how to navigate two systems of knowing.”
