Often condemned by critics for being overly emotional, films by female directors that feature female protagonists have often been popular with audiences, yet judged not to express \u2018real\u2019 history.<\/p>\n<p>Audiences learn much about the past from movies and women are increasingly bringing new representations to the screen \u2013 effectively changing perceptions of history, with concepts like\u00a0valour, memory and resistance being re-envisioned.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Gendering History on Screen: Women Filmmakers and Historical Films<\/em><\/strong> is the first book to focus entirely on the analysis of female film directors\u2019 innovations in historical films.<\/p>\n<p>Launched at the \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/womensfilmandtelevisionhistory.wordpress.com\/2018\/04\/03\/doing-womens-film-and-television-history-iv-calling-the-shots-then-now-and-next\/\">Women\u2019s Film and Television History Network UK\/Ireland<\/a>\u2019 (United Kingdom, 23 \u2013 25 May 2018), Associate Professor Erhart\u2019s book demonstrates how directors influence audiences\u2019 sense of the past and how women are providing new narratives and shaping a critique of policies and institutions on contemporary feminism.<\/p>\n<p>The book is yet to launch in Australia but is available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibtauris.com\/Books\/The-arts\/Film-TV--radio\/Gendering-History-on-Screen-Women-Filmmakers-and-Historical-Films?menuitem=%7bDFF51E2F-C0BA-4928-ACC4-415188DCDEE8%7d\">online<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A book by Flinders Associate Professor Julia Erhart explores female film directors\u2019 innovations in historical films and how they are re-defining audiences\u2019 perceptions of history.
