{"id":10377,"date":"2018-07-03T10:09:25","date_gmt":"2018-07-03T00:39:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/fit\/?p=10377"},"modified":"2018-07-03T15:47:30","modified_gmt":"2018-07-03T06:17:30","slug":"farewell-professor-john-beynon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/fit\/2018\/07\/03\/farewell-professor-john-beynon\/","title":{"rendered":"Farewell, Professor John Beynon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week Flinders University bade a fond farewell to the College of Science and Engineering Vice-President and Executive Dean <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/people\/john.beynon\">Professor John Beynon<\/a> upon his retirement.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Beynon <a href=\"https:\/\/news.flinders.edu.au\/blog\/2016\/06\/01\/new-executive-dean-for-science-and-engineering\/\">commenced his role<\/a>\u00a0with Flinders University in July 2016 and has steered the College through an exciting and formative two-year period.<\/p>\n<p>Milestones for the College during his tenure included the establishment of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tmihub.com.au\/\">Tonsley Manufacturing Innovation Hub<\/a>, important new defence partnerships and cutting-edge autonomous vehicle trials.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017 the College of Science and Engineering contributed to a number of impressive rankings for Flinders, with the University:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ranked the Number one South Australian university in undergraduate science and mathematics (for overall quality of educational experience, engaged learning, learning resources and skills development<\/li>\n<li>ranked the Number one South Australian university for undergraduate computing and information systems (for good teaching practice)<\/li>\n<li>highly-rated (compared to the national average) for its undergraduate engineering degrees (all rankings from Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching [QILT], 2017)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Professor Beynon\u2019s career was celebrated at an afternoon tea at Alere Function Centre last week, with friends, family and colleagues including Chancellor Stephen Gerlach AM, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Students) Professor Clare Pollock, and Vice President, Corporate Services Mark Gregory gathering to congratulate him on his many achievements.<\/p>\n<p>Born on the UK\u2019s Isle of Man, Professor Beynon has forged an outstanding career as a university administrator and leading academic in the field of engineering and metallurgy, both in the UK and Australia.<\/p>\n<p>His sterling resume includes being listed in Engineers Australia\u2019s Top 100 Most Influential Engineers in Australia for 2011-2015, and being awarded the Bessemer Gold Medal in the UK (2015) for services to the steel industry.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Ian Menz, the College\u2019s Dean (People and Resources), will act as Interim Vice-President and Executive Dean until the University\u2019s recruitment process for this important role is complete.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week Flinders University bade a fond farewell to the College of Science and Engineering Vice-President and Executive Dean Professor John Beynon upon his retirement.
