plus COVID-19 projects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Congratulations to three of the latest Flinders University NHMRC grant recipients, Professor Danny Eckert, Associate Professor Simon Conn and Dr Monica Cations.<\/p>\n<p>Their projects in sleep health, cancer treatment and better aged care have been awarded more than $4.67 million in Australian Government health and medical research grants announced last week.<\/p>\n<p>The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) grants \u2013 to chief investigators <a href=\"https:\/\/news.flinders.edu.au\/blog\/2020\/05\/20\/unmasking-new-solutions-for-sleep-apnoea\/\">Professor Danny Eckert<\/a> (Adelaide Institute for Sleep Health) and cancer researcher <a href=\"https:\/\/news.flinders.edu.au\/blog\/2020\/05\/21\/new-push-targets-deadly-brain-cancer\/\">Associate Professor Simon Conn<\/a> \u2013 add to a \u2018mental health in aged care\u2019 grant to <a href=\"https:\/\/news.flinders.edu.au\/blog\/2020\/05\/22\/improving-aged-care-access-to-mental-health-services\/\">Dr Monica Cations<\/a> through the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) Priority Round.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe latest projects add to the rich stream of high-quality research coming from the Flinders Health and Medical Research Institute,\u201d says Professor Robert Saint, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) at Flinders University.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTogether, the strength of our University\u2019s research is making vital inroads into a wide range of health and medical priorities affecting millions of Australians, and people everywhere, at a time when our community is acutely aware of the critical importance of health and medical research.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>COVID-19 Research Grant Scheme at Flinders University\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the six colleges have announced 35 new COVID-19 research grant scheme projects at Flinders University &#8211; some in collaboration with external partners.<\/p>\n<p>The multidisciplinary efforts at Flinders University, targeting important research on COVID-19 and the SARS-CoV-2 virus, cover wide-ranging potential solutions and information for future pandemics.<\/p>\n<p>The projects range from <a href=\"https:\/\/news.flinders.edu.au\/blog\/2020\/04\/23\/bid-to-reduce-respiratory-covid-19-deaths\/\">finding a bacterial link to respiratory failure<\/a> to tracing the virus in South Australia\u2019s sewage systems (see details of 11 of the projects in the College of Science and Engineering, and College of Medicine and Public Health at<a href=\"https:\/\/news.flinders.edu.au\/blog\/2020\/04\/23\/bid-to-reduce-respiratory-covid-19-deaths\/\"> the link<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The 24 projects in the four other colleges include:<\/p>\n<p><strong>College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u2018It\u2019s just like that big flu in \u201869, but this time we\u2019ve gotta be more careful\u2019: Remote Aboriginal community understandings of and responses to the COVID-19 Pandemic (led by Professor Amanda Kearney)<\/li>\n<li>A public health system response to abortion provision during the COVID-19 pandemic (Associate Professor Catherine Kevin)<\/li>\n<li>Cultural understandings of COVID-19 in remote Aboriginal communities (Professor Claire Smith)<\/li>\n<li>The Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on wellbeing of individuals and households in South Australia (Associate Professor Udoy Saikia)<\/li>\n<li>Zoonotic diseases and the biopolitics of COVID-19 (Professor Vanessa Lemm)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/caring-futures-institute\/2020\/05\/21\/researchers-kickstart-research-with-covid-19-grants\/\"><strong>Caring Futures Institute<\/strong><\/a><strong> &#8211;
