{"id":21244,"date":"2023-07-18T11:28:33","date_gmt":"2023-07-18T01:58:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/fit\/?p=21244"},"modified":"2023-07-18T15:29:03","modified_gmt":"2023-07-18T05:59:03","slug":"nix-shares-his-writing-tricks-as-writer-in-residence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/fit\/2023\/07\/18\/nix-shares-his-writing-tricks-as-writer-in-residence\/","title":{"rendered":"Writer in Residence Nix shares writing tricks"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">\n<p>Flinders University&#8217;s Writer in Residence for 2023 is celebrated Australian writer Garth Nix, who specialises in children&#8217;s and young adult fantasy novels.<\/p>\n<p>As the latest guest writer to be hosted by the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, Melbourne-based Garth will provide valuable guidance and knowledge for Flinders&#8217; creative writing students through a busy week-long schedule of events.<\/p>\n<p>More than six million copies of Garth\u2019s books have been sold around the world, and they have appeared on the bestseller lists of <em>The New York Times<\/em>, <em>Publishers Weekly<\/em>, <em>The Bookseller <\/em>and others. His work has also been translated into 42 languages and he has won multiple Aurealis Awards, the ABIA Award, Ditmar Award, the Mythopoeic Award, CBCA Honour Book, and shortlisted for the Locus Awards, the Shirley Jackson Award and others.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-21245 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/fit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2023\/07\/cover-196x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"196\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/fit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2023\/07\/cover-196x300.jpg 196w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/fit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2023\/07\/cover.jpg 345w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 196px) 100vw, 196px\" \/>Garth has been a full-time writer since 2001, but has also worked as a literary agent, marketing consultant, book editor, book publicist, book sales representative, bookseller, and as a part-time soldier in the Australian Army Reserve.<\/p>\n<p>Garth\u2019s books include the Old Kingdom fantasy series: <em>Sabriel<\/em>, <em>Lirael<\/em>, <em>Abhorsen, Clariel<\/em>, <em>Goldenhand,<\/em> and <em>Terciel and Elinor<\/em>; SF novels <em>Shade\u2019s Children<\/em> and <em>A Confusion of Princes<\/em>; fantasy novels<em> Angel Mage<\/em>; <em>The Left-Handed Booksellers of London <\/em>and sequel <em>The Sinister Booksellers of Bath<\/em>; and a Regency romance with magic, <em>Newt\u2019s Emerald<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>His novels for children include <em>The Ragwitch<\/em>; the six books of <em>The Seventh Tower<\/em> sequence; <em>Frogkisser!<\/em> and <em>The Keys to the Kingdom<\/em> series; plus, co-written with Sean Williams, the <em>Troubletwisters<\/em> and <em>Have Sword Will Travel<\/em> series.<\/p>\n<p>His next book (which will be released during August 2023) is <em>Sir Hereward and Mister Fitz: Stories of the Witch Knight and the Puppet Sorcerer<\/em>, which collects all nine stories of the godslaying duo.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span class=\"x_ContentPasted0\">On Tuesday, 25 July at 7pm, Garth will have an o<\/span><span class=\"x_ContentPasted0\">nline conversation with Sean Williams called \u2018A Reading Life is a Writing Life\u2019 &#8211; which will provide an opportunity to meet and greet Garth online before he arrives at Flinders to begin his residency.
