{"id":23420,"date":"2024-08-05T16:31:08","date_gmt":"2024-08-05T07:01:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/fit\/?p=23420"},"modified":"2024-08-06T11:46:23","modified_gmt":"2024-08-06T02:16:23","slug":"nominations-for-flinders-in-australias-leading-science-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/fit\/2024\/08\/05\/nominations-for-flinders-in-australias-leading-science-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Nominations for Flinders in Australia\u2019s leading science awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Flinders University has received two nominations for this year&#8217;s Australian Museum Eureka Prizes, Australia\u2019s leading science awards now in their 34th year.<\/p>\n<p>With 19 prizes across four categories \u2013 Research and Innovation, Leadership, Science Engagement and School Science \u2013 the Australian Museum Eureka Prizes are the nation\u2019s premier science awards, celebrating the very best of Australian scientific discovery, invention, communication, innovation and leadership.<\/p>\n<p>Flinders University\u2019s Passport to Recovery, led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/people\/karen.burkedasilva\">Professor Karen Burke Da Silva<\/a>, has been nominated for the <em>Department of Industry, Science and Resources Eureka Prize for Innovation in Citizen Science<\/em>, in the Science Engagement category.<\/p>\n<p>More than 3,500 tourists and locals have contributed to Passport to Recovery, providing critical insights into Kangaroo Island\u2019s recovery after the 2019\/2020 bushfires. It brings 12 programs together in one website and app, including initiatives on native bees, roadkill and koala movements. Ongoing data collection will also help other areas in Australia recovering from fires.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Passport to Recovery \u2013 Finalist, 2024 Eureka Prize for Innovation in Citizen Science\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mlGrgNqtj2k?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/people\/mike.morley\">Associate Professor Mike Morley<\/a> is part of the Extinction vs Adaption Team, nominated for the <em>Aspire Scholarship Eureka Prize for Excellence in Interdisciplinary Scientific Research<\/em> in the Research &amp; Innovation category.<\/p>\n<p>Led by Macquarie University and bringing nine disciplines together, the Extinction vs Adaption Team solved long-standing primate mysteries by establishing why some species became extinct while others survived. Using novel dating techniques and fieldwork at multiple cave sites in Asia, they discovered why some species are more vulnerable to environmental changes. This knowledge will help to conserve threatened primate species.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Extinction vs Adaption - Finalist, 2024 Eureka Prize for Excellence in InterDisc Scientific Research\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Q1GavnwN8TY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Winners will be announced on Wednesday 4 September at a ceremony held at Sydney Town Hall.
