She spoke about how the pandemic influenced a move into advancement, and why connecting donors and Flinders inspires her every day.

Tell us a little about your role at Flinders.

This role plays a crucial part in cultivating and managing relationships with our donors to secure and enhance their support for Flinders University’s key funding priorities. This work is central to advancing the University’s initiatives, including providing scholarships and research.

What sort of career journey have you had?

Throughout my career, I’ve always been passionate about helping people, whether it’s been through healthcare or education. With nearly 15 years in higher education, I have supported various areas including placements, assessment, community engagement and social accountability within MPH. Recently, I expanded my skillset by working across SE, BGL, and HASS, enhancing industry engagement and career preparation for graduates.

My passion for making a positive impact has been the driving force behind my work in academia, healthcare, and community settings. In my new role in Advancement, I am eager to continue this mission by building relationships and supporting projects that align with the university’s values and goals and am excited to play a small role in making a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

When did you decide to have a career in Advancement?

My decision to pursue a career in Advancement was significantly influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic. Coming from a family that has benefited from research and contributes to fundraising, I felt compelled to support our students through contributions to the Matthews Flinders Scholarship. Hearing how this scholarship positively impacted students broadened my perspective on the profound effects of philanthropy and motivated me to consider a career in Advancement.

What are you most looking forward to in your role?

I really enjoy being a part of connecting donors and the university. It’s all about listening to what donors are passionate about and making sure their goals align with the university’s needs. When the partnership works, it’s rewarding to see the tangible impact and shared success stories. Building trust and long-term relationships is key, and it’s an honour to witness the positive outcomes from these collaborations.

Where’s your favourite spot on campus?

I have many favourite spots across our campus locations, but the views at Bedford Park are unparalleled. From Bedford Park, you can see Tonsley, which also offers stunning vistas of the hills and the district. And of course, the city campus views are spectacular. However, the most magical moment for me is during winter, just before sunset at Bedford Park, when the sun dips down and the sky transforms with a breathtaking array of colours….its always worth working late to see!

How do you like to spend your spare time?

I love running, although I have now switched from marathon training to ParkRun! I love camping – completely off grid – and spending time with family at shacks at the Coorong and I love spending time with my two-year-old grand baby, Elliott. This is alongside completing my final year as a student in the Flinders MBA!

We caught up with newly arrived Advancement Manager Linnea Boileau to hear about her lifelong passion for helping others.
