{"id":25255,"date":"2025-12-15T11:40:59","date_gmt":"2025-12-15T01:10:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/fit\/?p=25255"},"modified":"2025-12-16T10:20:52","modified_gmt":"2025-12-15T23:50:52","slug":"in-touch-with-nathan-caruana","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/fit\/2025\/12\/15\/in-touch-with-nathan-caruana\/","title":{"rendered":"In Touch With&#8230; Nathan Caruana"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What is your role here at Flinders?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I\u2019m\u00a0an Associate Professor of Psychology, where I teach on topics related to cognitive psychology,\u00a0neuroscience\u00a0and AI &#8211; and lead the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.haviclab.com\/\">HAVIC Lab<\/a> for Human, Artificial and Virtual Interactive Cognition. I also help coordinate our undergraduate psychology program, focusing on student partnerships, outreach, and alumni engagement &#8211; and sit on the Research Committee for my college and the Institute for Mental Health and Wellbeing.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What initially drew you to psychology? And\u00a0to\u00a0your continued research in cognitive psychology?<\/span><\/b><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">I decided I wanted to be a psychologist when I was\u00a0very young, but\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0not sure why. My parents say I talked about it as a child &#8211; picking out the chaise longue\u00a0for my future office every time we were in a furniture store! What really hooked me was a neuropsychology lecture in\u00a0first\u00a0year of my\u00a0undergrad\u00a0degree.\u00a0I was fascinated by how the brain shapes the way we experience the world \u2013 and how certain injuries could give rise to conditions such as visual spatial neglect,\u00a0aphasia\u00a0or body ownership illusions. Later, I worked as an education aid with an autistic child and his family \u2013 and this experience inspired my PhD on the cognitive and neural mechanisms of social interaction in autism. That shaped the various research streams in my lab today, where we use virtual and artificial agents to better understand and support social connection, learning and wellbeing across the lifespan.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What is the focus of the HAVIC Lab? How does it support the neurodiverse community? And the wider community?<\/span><\/b><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">We explore how people understand and interact with others, both human and artificial. Our projects\u00a0include\u00a0co-designing VR tools to support neuroinclusive employment for autistic adults\u00a0and uncovering and reducing the stigma that autistic people\u00a0encounter\u00a0in everyday interactions. As well as\u00a0developing social robots that help children engage with reading\u00a0and looking at\u00a0how robot design can foster trust and collaboration in workplace contexts (e.g.\u00a0manufacturing). Weekly lab meetings with my team are a highlight and seeing former PhD students grow into independent researchers is incredibly rewarding. Recently,\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0been collaborating with a former PhD student on some new projects they have been leading,\u00a0and it has been a full-circle moment \u2013 although\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0aware that says more about their career than mine! Another recent highlight was being invited as a Faculty Member to the 2025 Summer School on Social Connections and Well-being in the Digital Era at the Lake Como School of Advanced Studies. The faculty and students were so bright and enthusiastic, and it was a real gift to discuss emerging research in a beautiful setting (and with\u00a0good food).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What do you\u00a0enjoy about\u00a0working at Flinders University?<\/span><\/b><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">In just two years at\u00a0Flinders,\u00a0I have met so many partners and friends from all corners of the university &#8211; across all colleges and in many professional teams (e.g.\u00a0operations, marketing, HDR engagement, recruitment, legal, IDS).\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0never experienced anything quite like it before. I feel like people at Flinders are primed for collaboration and community in a way that\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0true of most large\u00a0organisations.\u00a0It&#8217;s\u00a0made many aspects of my professional life more productive (and enjoyable).\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Tell us about your ideal weekend.<\/span><\/b><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">A trip to the\u00a0Willunga\u00a0markets, a walk from Brighton to Glenelg, and\u00a0maybe some\u00a0gardening (with an inevitable visit to Bunnings with my kids!).
