To celebrate 60 years of Flinders University, Flinders in Touch is looking back through the archives to highlight stories of impact from our past. Every month we\u2019ll share a story about how much things have changed, or perhaps not at all, over the decades! These University highlights show how from the outset, we’ve been changing lives … together we can change 10 million lives for the better by 2035.<\/em><\/p>\n

Our commitment to electric vehicles started a long time ago<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

In April 1974, Flinders University hosted South Australia’s first Electric Vehicle Exhibition with thousands of people attending to see, feel and sit in over 50 electric vehicles. From lawnmowers, golf buggies and wheelchairs at the smaller end, to cars, tow tractors and forklift trucks.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The exhibition attracted remarkable interest, but it\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0the first\u00a0connection\u00a0that Flinders had with electric vehicle research. In 1973, the South Australian government provided a total of $27,000 in grants to\u00a0commence\u00a0the Electric\u00a0Vehicle\u00a0Project. This was followed up with a whopping $50,000 in 1975.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Before the\u00a0arrival of the\u00a0second round of grant money,\u00a0Flinders had\u00a0already developed, \u201ca small electric car technically superior in many respects to currently produced\u00a0off-the-shelf electric vehicles.\u201d\u00a0Just to cement the car in\u00a0Flinders’\u00a0history, they named it\u00a0<\/span>The Investigator.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During a time, not unlike the present, where society was grappling with rising fuel prices, the long-term hope was to kickstart an electric vehicle industry here in South Australia. This was a time when Chrysler and Holden were producing their peak number of petrol-driven vehicles and taking design ownership with Australian design modifications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fast forward to 2026, and Flinders\u2019 commitment to sustainability has turned our\u00a0focus\u00a0back to electric vehicles.\u00a0Fifty\u00a0percent of\u00a0Flinders fleet vehicles across South Australia and Northern Territory\u00a0are\u00a0either\u00a0fully\u00a0electric\u00a0(36%)\u00a0or hybrid\u00a0(14%), with that number growing.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the Flinders 2030 Sustainability Strategy, our goal is to electrify the entire small vehicle fleet and 90% of the entire fleet. Next on the agenda is the electrification of\u00a0campus loop bus services.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0engineers\u00a0who\u00a0built\u00a0<\/span>The Investigator<\/span><\/i>\u00a0would have delighted in the 50+ EV chargers we have to choose from\u00a0on campus, let alone the\u00a0Vehicle-to-Grid charging capacity\u00a0which might\u00a0have\u00a0sent a shiver through its battery.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Investigator is currently being restored by the South Australian branch of the Electric Vehicle Association.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
