{"id":25587,"date":"2026-04-13T13:21:44","date_gmt":"2026-04-13T03:51:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/fit\/?p=25587"},"modified":"2026-04-14T12:03:42","modified_gmt":"2026-04-14T02:33:42","slug":"stop-food-waste","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/fit\/2026\/04\/13\/stop-food-waste\/","title":{"rendered":"Stop food waste"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Despite the rising cost of groceries, the average Australian household throws 265kg of food waste in the bin each year (that\u2019s\u00a033% of all food grown and produced globally, wasted.)\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">This is costing households more than $2,500 per year and accounts for 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">Australia has a stated\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/goals\" href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/goals\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"3\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">Sustainable Development Goal<\/span><\/a><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"> of halving food waste by 2030, which would remove 50 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. Over 20% of this waste reduction would come from households.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">As part of Flinders\u2019\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"https:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/content\/dam\/documents\/campus\/sustainability\/flinders-university-2030-sustainability-strategy.pdf\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/content\/dam\/documents\/campus\/sustainability\/flinders-university-2030-sustainability-strategy.pdf\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"4\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">2030 Sustainability Strategy<\/span><\/a><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">, we have committed to reducing our\u00a0campus\u00a0waste by 30% by 2030.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">Why not use Stop Food Waste Day on Wednesday 29 April to kick off changes on campus and at home?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-25589 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/fit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2026\/04\/compostable-logo.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"189\" height=\"267\" \/>On campus, using the right bins for your waste is the first step to making a difference.\u00a0Use the green Organics bins for all your fo<\/span><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">od scraps (cooked and raw meats, bones, cake and bread, seafood, eggshells, cheese and yoghurt, rice, pasta, fruits and vegetables, nuts, etc); tissues,\u00a0napkins\u00a0and paper towels; and certified compostable cups, lids, food\u00a0packaging\u00a0and bags. (All packaging on campus should have this certified compostable AS-4736 \u2018seedling\u2019 logo, so it can go in the green Organics bins.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">Flinders\u2019 Organic was<\/span><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">te is collected from our campus green Organics bins, from food\u00a0providers\u00a0and student kitchens, and is processed by South Australian organic recycling firm,\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"http:\/\/www.jeffries.com.au\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jeffries.com.au\/\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"5\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">Jeffries<\/span><\/a><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">,<\/span><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">\u00a0to produce compost and soil for farmers, viticulturists,\u00a0landscapers\u00a0and home gardeners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">Visit the\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"https:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/campus\/sustainability\/resource-recovery%20for%20farmers,%20viticulturists,%20landscapers%20and%20home%20gardeners.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/campus\/sustainability\/resource-recovery\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"6\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">resource recovery web page<\/span><\/a><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">\u00a0for more information about reducing waste on campus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">At home, there are many<\/span><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">\u00a0steps you can take to help turn food waste around, save money and reduce emissions.
