{"id":1763,"date":"2018-05-21T15:54:51","date_gmt":"2018-05-21T06:24:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/flinders-nt\/?p=1763"},"modified":"2018-05-23T12:46:13","modified_gmt":"2018-05-23T03:16:13","slug":"centre-remote-health-welcomes-sir-michael-marmot-alice-springs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/flinders-nt\/2018\/05\/21\/centre-remote-health-welcomes-sir-michael-marmot-alice-springs\/","title":{"rendered":"Centre for Remote Health welcomes Sir Michael Marmot to Alice Springs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Centre for Remote Health (CRH) proudly welcomed Professor of Epidemiology at University College London, Chair of the Flinders University Southgate Institute\u2019s International Advisory Board and social inequality health expert Professor Sir Michael Marmot, during his visit to Alice Springs on 4th May.<\/p>\n<p>During his seminar, Health Equity: Taking Action, held at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crh.org.au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Centre for Remote Health<\/a>, Sir Michael presented global data on health inequities and the social gradient, and provided numerous examples of actions that can contribute to reducing health inequities ranging from early childhood development, social security payments and the value to be gained from preventing tax avoidance by trans-national corporations. The seminar was attended by over 140 health professionals and interested citizens, and many others from around the country viewed the session via live streaming.<\/p>\n<p>The session was chaired by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/people\/jonathan.craig\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Professor Jonathan Craig<\/a>, recently appointed Flinders University Vice President and Executive Dean of the College of Medicine and Public Health, who referred to Sir Michael in his introduction as a global \u2018paradigm shifter\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Welcome to Country was conducted by local Arrernte woman and CRH Lecturer, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/people\/kathleen.martin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kathleen Martin<\/a>.
