Industry project with Garçon Wines inspires sustainable career focus

When business students Yanti Kus Dewi, Rubayat Sarwar and Xiaowei Shi took a Flinders industry project with wine packaging company Garçon Wines, they didn’t expect the project to instil a passion for climate change.

Yanti Kus Dewi, Rubaya Sarwar and Ziaowei Shi together participated in an industry project as part of their Master of Business degree with Garcon Wines, looking into launching flat-bottled wine packaging in the Oceania region.

Ziaowei Shi said, “After the three-month industry project with Garçon Wines, I did expect the project to deliver industry experience and to transcend national boarders, but I didn’t expect the project to inspire and show me that a job with a sustainability focus is achievable.”

“Initially developed to fit through UK letterboxes to enable easy delivery and avoid failed delivery, the Garçon Wines flat-bottle is having a massive impact on reducing carbon emissions within the supply chain, with improvements in packaging, (they are 100% recycled) and having a massive impact on production and transportation costs.”

“I feel so fortunate to have been able to work in an international company with a focus on sustainability,” he said.

Flinders International Business student Rubayat Sarwar.

Ms Rubayat Sarwar who won the award for best student presentation in 2020 at Flinders University found the company’s eco-friendly focus inspiring.

“Australia is the sixth-largest wine producer in the world, and we export over 60 per cent of our production across long distances, and so it was very exciting to be working on a project that has such a large impact on so many businesses in Australia.”

“In late 2020 Garçon Wines announced that Banrock Station, the eco-friendly wine brand from Accolade Wines, is releasing the first flat bottle made from 100% recycled PET plastic into UK supermarkets. This follows the successful launch of Australian wine brand Hardy’s in Finland, Sweden and Denmark.”

“I won the award for best student presentation in 2020, entitled SWOT Analysis for Garçon Wines”, she said.

Flinders student Yanti Kus Dewi said that, “I have so many wonderful memories from this project, the Garçon Wines team were so supportive and responsive, it was a great experience whilst studying the Master of Business at Flinders university.”
