{"id":652,"date":"2025-04-23T13:17:47","date_gmt":"2025-04-23T03:47:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/hdr-students\/?p=652"},"modified":"2026-05-07T16:35:00","modified_gmt":"2026-05-07T07:05:00","slug":"alexandra-manson-2024-nhs-winner-of-the-best-hdr-student-publication","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/hdr-students\/2025\/04\/23\/alexandra-manson-2024-nhs-winner-of-the-best-hdr-student-publication\/","title":{"rendered":"Alexandra Manson \u2013 2024 NHS Winner of the Best HDR Student Publication"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alexandra Manson<\/strong> is from the College of Nursing and Health Sciences and is one of the eight winners of the Best HDR Student Publication Award for 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Her winning publication <strong>Unpacking the cost of the lunchbox for Australian families: a secondary analysis <\/strong>explores the potential of school-provided meals in Australia, particularly understanding the parent perspective.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alexandra<\/strong> is supervised by <a href=\"https:\/\/staff.flinders.edu.au\/staff-directory\/staff-directory-person-details?SD_UserID=624814218\">Dr Brittany Johnson<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/staff.flinders.edu.au\/staff-directory\/staff-directory-person-details?SD_UserID=624783677\">Professor Rebecca Golley<\/a> at Flinders University.<\/p>\n<p>We invited <strong>Alexandra<\/strong>\u00a0to share insights into her PhD journey and what winning this award means.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1093\/heapro\/daad194\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-845\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/hdr-students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2023\/06\/View-Publication.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"42\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-656\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/hdr-students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2022\/10\/Yellow-Line-1024x18.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"11\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/hdr-students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2022\/10\/Yellow-Line-1024x18.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/hdr-students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2022\/10\/Yellow-Line-300x5.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/hdr-students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2022\/10\/Yellow-Line-768x13.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/hdr-students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2022\/10\/Yellow-Line.png 1772w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>What does your publication explore? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This publication aimed to determine what families are currently paying for school lunchboxes in Australian primary schools, and to examine associations between food costs and socio-demographic factors with diet quality.<\/p>\n<p>This research, conducted in collaboration with researchers at the University of Newcastle, explored the costs of lunchboxes to Australian families, recognising the challenges of rising costs of living for parents and need to create supportive systems to ease the burden of school food.<\/p>\n<p>I promoted this research in a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.flinders.edu.au\/blog\/2024\/01\/31\/unpacking-school-lunchbox-costs\/\">media release<\/a>, resulting in me being interviewed for a <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/ps0tua07eY8\">national TV news story<\/a> and numerous radio interviews unpacking school lunchbox spending in Australia, which was a great experience.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-656\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/hdr-students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2022\/10\/Yellow-Line-1024x18.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"11\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/hdr-students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2022\/10\/Yellow-Line-1024x18.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/hdr-students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2022\/10\/Yellow-Line-300x5.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/hdr-students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2022\/10\/Yellow-Line-768x13.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/hdr-students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2022\/10\/Yellow-Line.png 1772w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tell us about your PhD journey so far<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I am at the end of my PhD journey, which is bittersweet! I have loved the PhD experience, particularly being part of a supportive team and being involved in the college as a CNHS HDR representative. I completed a placement in a primary school, then my honours on the nutrition of school food, finding an interest in public health and the potential of the school setting. I continue to work closely with communities, now supporting them in establishing new school-provided meal programs.
