Building the foundations for a career in Medicine and Healthcare with Kevin

Taiwanese physiotherapy student, Kevin.

Kevin has always loved sports, but his desire to help people move, grow, and recover inspired him to pursue a career in physiotherapy.

“Initially, I was passionate about sports and aspired to pursue a career in the field. I was also drawn to the diverse opportunities that physiotherapy offers, including the ability to work across various areas such as sports, rehabilitation, and child development.”

Eager to broaden his skills and keep his options open, Kevin made the inspiring decision to move from Taiwan to Australia to study the Bachelor of Health Sciences/Master of Physiotherapy at Flinders University.

“This combined degree offers the unique structure for students to build a great foundation in the undergraduate studies for the more specialised degree. At the same time, the course also provides students with the opportunity to explore and experience different health fields before making their decision on a program to specialise in,” he says.

Real clinical experience with real community impact

A highlight of the combined degree is its hands-on focus, giving students like Kevin extensive real-world experience. With up to 26 weeks of supervised clinical placement and at least one rural or remote opportunity, students learn to confidently support clients with diverse needs across multiple healthcare settings.

“I have completed several five-week placements so far in my course. These placements have allowed me to put theoretical knowledge into practice while gaining experience across different sectors within physiotherapy,” he says.

What truly sets Flinders apart is Health2Go, a student-led health clinic located on-campus at Flinders Bedford Park. It provides students with the unique opportunity to work with real clients under professional supervision, right in the heart of their learning environment. Through his physiotherapy studies, Kevin has been guided by experienced clinicians while supporting members of the community.

“The university also places a strong emphasis on the practical aspects of education, ensuring that students are career-ready upon graduation and able to seamlessly apply their learning in the workplace.”

This additional hands-on experience at Health2Go has boosted Kevin’s confidence in clinical practice, while connecting him with a community of future healthcare professionals.

Thriving through connection

After three years at Flinders, Kevin has become a familiar face within the international student community. He is someone who steps up, gets involved, and embraces every opportunity that comes his way. His biggest piece of advice for future students?

“Be open to trying new things and getting involved in the various events and clubs that Flinders has to offer.”

Throughout his studies, Kevin has made a conscious effort to stay active on campus. He’s joined both study-focused and cultural student clubs, taken on the role of International Student Ambassador, and really made an effort to connect with and mentor his fellow students.

“The international student community at Flinders is diverse and inclusive, actively working to ensure that students from all backgrounds feel welcome and supported throughout their studies,” he says.

Taking the next step on his Flinders journey

Now a Bachelor of Health Sciences/Master of Physiotherapy graduate, Kevin is ready to take the next step in his healthcare journey by pursuing a Doctor of Medicine at Flinders.

“Throughout my time at Flinders, the idea of pursuing Medicine continued to linger and grew stronger as I gained a deeper understanding of how the healthcare system functions and the impact it has, particularly through my placements,” he says.

With close friends currently undertaking the Doctor of Medicine course, Kevin has seen firsthand the level of dedication and discipline the course demands. However, he has also seen his friends grow into confident, career-ready graduates, which has inspired him to follow the same path.

With an internationally recognised and innovative curriculum, the Flinders medical course provides Kevin the chance to deepen his skills, broaden his career possibilities, and further pursue his commitment to supporting the health and wellbeing of others.
