{"id":217,"date":"2020-06-30T03:05:06","date_gmt":"2020-06-30T03:05:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/international\/?p=217"},"modified":"2020-07-31T05:18:12","modified_gmt":"2020-07-31T05:18:12","slug":"fulfilling-career-ambitions-with-nursing-student-zahra-hussein","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/international\/2020\/06\/30\/fulfilling-career-ambitions-with-nursing-student-zahra-hussein\/","title":{"rendered":"Fulfilling career ambitions with Nursing student Zahra Hussein"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI find immense pleasure in helping people and nursing gives me the opportunity,\u201d says Zahra Hussein, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/study\/courses\/bachelor-nursing-preregistration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Flinders Bachelor of Nursing (Pre Registration)<\/a> student. \u201cTo help people when they need it the most, providing effective nursing care and being a part of a patient&#8217;s healing journey is the most fulfilling experience to me personally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zahra chose to study nursing at Flinders due to its unique teaching methods. \u201cIt\u2019s one of the top universities in Australia for nursing,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd Flinders have great facilities that are set up for nursing students, as well as allocating an entire library to the needs of nursing students.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Facilities and on-campus experience<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cWhat I enjoy most about the Flinders campus is the convenience it offers to students,\u201d Zahra says of her time spent on campus.\u201cFrom the various services and institutes that cater to students&#8217; needs \u2013 such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/students.flinders.edu.au\/student-services\/iss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">international student services<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/campus\/bedford-park\/location\/loop-bus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Flinders loop bus<\/a>, and the student hub.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zahra has found the inclusivity for international students welcoming. \u201cStudents are not made to feel excluded, with the addition of <a href=\"https:\/\/oasis.flinders.edu.au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">prayer rooms<\/a>, ablution places in toilets, and halal food,\u201d says Zahra. \u201cThese are very valuable and highly convenient additions for me as an international Muslim student.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-220 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/87\/2020\/06\/FlindersUni160216-104-Full_Res.jpg\" alt=\"Flinders University Plaza\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/87\/2020\/06\/FlindersUni160216-104-Full_Res.jpg 700w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/87\/2020\/06\/FlindersUni160216-104-Full_Res-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Industry experience and placement opportunities<\/h2>\n<p>Flinders are leaders in the health education sector, and nursing students learn from award-winning lecturers in state-of-the-art facilities with team and problem-based learning. The focus of the course is to develop students into a registered nurse; one that is reflective about their practice with well-developed clinical reasoning skills and a commitment to lifelong learning. Most importantly, to Zahra, the degree is packed with industry experience and placement opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe thing I enjoyed the most about my degree was <a href=\"https:\/\/students.flinders.edu.au\/my-course\/placements\/compliance\/nursing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">clinical placements<\/a>,\u201d Zahra says of her internship experiences. \u201cClinical placements allowed me to experience practical care and as well as what to anticipate as a future registered nurse (RN).\u201d The networking opportunities were also vital for the nursing student.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt gave me the chance to meet numerous excellent and professional RNs and different patients \u2013 as well as unique cases which massively impacted on the theory aspect of my nursing.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Adelaide lifestyle<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI decided to study in Adelaide because I like the relaxing kind of lifestyle it offers,\u201d syas Zahra of her adopted home. \u201cI enjoyed South Australia\u2019s beautiful natural scenery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zahra enjoyed the numerous and easily accessible tourist attractions, including <a href=\"https:\/\/gorgewildlifepark.com.au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gorge Wildlife Park,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clelandwildlifepark.sa.gov.au\/Home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cleland Wildlife Park<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/thetoyfactory.com.au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Big Rocking Horse in Gumeracha<\/a>, among others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got to mingle with the native animals unique to Australia, including holding a koala and playing with kangaroos!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The financial aspects of Adelaide living appealed to Zahra as well. \u201cAdelaide is extremely affordable, as opposed to somewhere like Sydney or Melbourne,\u201d she says. \u201cThis is very convenient for me as an international student, as it takes added pressure off my financial management.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-221 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/87\/2020\/06\/things-to-do-zoos-parks-wildlife.jpg\" alt=\"Things to do in Adelaide\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/87\/2020\/06\/things-to-do-zoos-parks-wildlife.jpg 700w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/87\/2020\/06\/things-to-do-zoos-parks-wildlife-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Advice for prospective students<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cCome and study at Flinders if you want to feel like you are still at home while studying overseas,\u201d says Zahra. \u201cFlinders consider and anticipate international students&#8217; needs, and have put services and measures in place to ease the pressure of adjusting to academic life away from home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For her future, Zahra is thankful her internship experiences helped shape her career plans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI plan to be a scrub nurse in the near future \u2013 I was not sure what area of nursing I wanted to work in initially.
