{"id":222,"date":"2020-07-01T01:44:52","date_gmt":"2020-07-01T01:44:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/international\/?p=222"},"modified":"2020-07-31T05:21:54","modified_gmt":"2020-07-31T05:21:54","slug":"rewarding-challenges-with-languages-student-vy-khanh-dang","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/international\/2020\/07\/01\/rewarding-challenges-with-languages-student-vy-khanh-dang\/","title":{"rendered":"Rewarding challenges with languages student Vy Khanh Dang"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like languages because they bring valuable knowledge and experiences,\u201d says Vy Khanh Dang, a languages student studying a double degree Bachelor of Education (Secondary) and Bachelor of Languages (French and ESOL) at Flinders University.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis field not only gives me many opportunities to work with diverse cultures in Australia but also in other countries.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Career aspirations<\/h2>\n<p>Vy has long aspired to teach education. \u201cIt is a career filled with challenges that are rewarding because it gives me a sense of making a difference,\u201d she says. \u201cI have always felt an aspiration to become a language teacher, especially in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/study\/courses\/postgraduate-teaching-english-as-a-second-language\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)<\/a> field.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Being a language learner herself, it sparked a desire to support future students. \u201cI\u2019m looking forward to utilising the valuable knowledge, teaching, and learning strategies that I have gained from my course here at Flinders.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Choosing to study in Adelaide<\/h2>\n<p>It was an easy choice for Vy to settle in South Australia. \u201cAdelaide is an affordable city with a lower cost of living than other capital cities in Australia,\u201d she says of her adopted home. \u201cIt is a beautiful city with lovely people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Having lived in Adelaide for over eight years, the Vietnamese student is very familiar with the city and all its offerings. \u201cI really enjoy life here; it\u2019s not difficult to get around using public transport, there are many nice beaches and interesting places, and lots of <a href=\"https:\/\/adelaidecentralmarket.com.au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">local fresh food markets<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_225\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-225\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-225 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/87\/2020\/07\/Shopping-at-Adelaide-Central-Market-at-fruit-and-vegetable-shop.jpg\" alt=\"Adelaide central Markets\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/87\/2020\/07\/Shopping-at-Adelaide-Central-Market-at-fruit-and-vegetable-shop.jpg 700w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/87\/2020\/07\/Shopping-at-Adelaide-Central-Market-at-fruit-and-vegetable-shop-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-225\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Adelaide Central Markets<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Why choose Flinders?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cFlinders was the right choice for me because it stood out from the other universities,\u201d says Vy. \u201cThe education degree allows me to follow my interests by combining my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/international\/education\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bachelor of Education<\/a> with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/study\/courses\/bachelor-languages\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bachelor of Languages<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This is important for Vy as it will equip her with the skills to be a registered middle and secondary school teacher.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will be able to teach two secondary school subjects related to languages which are French and English for Speakers of Other Languages, and therefore it would give me many job options in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>The Flinders learning experience<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;ve had a great experience at Flinders University. I enjoy all of my topics as they have been taught by enthusiastic lecturers and tutors. The lessons are all engaging and relevant for my future teaching experience,\u201d she says. \u201cFurthermore, lecturers and tutors are flexible, understanding, and supportive of all students, with great knowledge and experience in their fields.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-210 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/87\/2020\/06\/Flinders_Landscape_HiRes__IMG_4526.jpg\" alt=\"Flinders International\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/87\/2020\/06\/Flinders_Landscape_HiRes__IMG_4526.jpg 700w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/87\/2020\/06\/Flinders_Landscape_HiRes__IMG_4526-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Facilities and the on-campus experience<\/h2>\n<p>Set across a sprawling hilltop, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/campus\/bedford-park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Flinders Bedford Park campus<\/a> is a green haven for students. \u201cThe grounds are beautiful, containing many shaded grassy areas to relax and study in nature,\u201d says Vy. The lake and trees attract wildlife like koalas, kangaroos, of course, the famous Flinders ducks.<\/p>\n<p>The Hub is a favourite of Vy\u2019s too. \u201cThe student hub has lots of places to study as well as private rooms which can be booked for group study. There is also space to relax, including a food court, a bar, and an outdoor amphitheater with a huge TV screen. The library is divided into areas designated for quiet study or places where you can talk. Some areas are open 24 hours, allowing for flexibility in my study time.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Practical industry-based placements<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/students.flinders.edu.au\/my-course\/placements\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Practical placements<\/a> are invaluable for all students, helping prepare them for the real-world workforce.
