{"id":244,"date":"2020-07-24T05:51:26","date_gmt":"2020-07-24T05:51:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/international\/?p=244"},"modified":"2020-10-27T02:29:18","modified_gmt":"2020-10-27T02:29:18","slug":"research-reputation-key-for-engineering-student-daniel-kim","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/international\/2020\/07\/24\/research-reputation-key-for-engineering-student-daniel-kim\/","title":{"rendered":"Research reputation key for Engineering student Daniel Kim"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For Daniel Kim, the chance to help improve people&#8217;s lives was an opportunity he couldn&#8217;t resist. \u201cI can help people with the machines that I design or create in many ways,\u201d says the biomedical engineering student.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI studied a bachelor of electronics engineering, but I have always been interested in the medical field as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The combination of the medical and engineering fields saw the Korean student choose to study a <a href=\"https:\/\/students.flinders.edu.au\/my-course\/course-rules\/postgrad\/mengscs\/mengscb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Master of Engineering (Biomedical)<\/a> at Flinders University in South Australia. \u201cThis course is about biomedical instrumentation and medical devices that can inspect and assist people in various ways,\u201d he says of his studies.<\/p>\n<h2>Adelaide lifestyle<\/h2>\n<p>Daniel moved to Adelaide because of his Flinders degree, yet he was pleasantly surprised by the city and the surrounding environment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdelaide is much more affordable than other cities in Australia,\u201d he says of his new home. \u201cThe accessibility of the beaches is one of the reasons I chose to study here as well!\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Why choose to study in Australia at Flinders?<\/h2>\n<p>The industry reputation of the Flinders Master of Engineering (Biomedical) course was a key selling point for Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI chose Flinders because it has a good curriculum for biomedical engineering,\u201d says Daniel. He cites the respected research reputation as an important factor for his decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is also the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sahealth.sa.gov.au\/wps\/wcm\/connect\/public+content\/sa+health+internet\/services\/hospitals\/flinders+medical+centre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Flinders Medical Centre<\/a> on campus at Bedford Park. In addition, there is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/research\/facilities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">biomedical research centre<\/a> in Tonsley \u2013 so there were lots of reasons for choosing Flinders.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Excellence in teaching and learning<\/h2>\n<p>Daniel loves to be in the laboratories, doing practical and hands-on learning. \u201cSince most of the topics have practicals or laboratories, it makes me more excited to learn and motivates me to participate in many activities,\u201d he says of his studies. Combined with theory and lectures, he has \u201c\u2026learnt more about the topics in a practical way.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_261\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-261\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-261 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/87\/2020\/07\/Tonsley.png\" alt=\"Tonsley Campus\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/87\/2020\/07\/Tonsley.png 700w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/87\/2020\/07\/Tonsley-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-261\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tonsley Campus<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Campus and facilities<\/h2>\n<p>All of Daniel\u2019s postgraduate engineering course is taught on the Tonsley Campus.<\/p>\n<p>Closely located to the main Bedford Park campus, the high-tech <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/campus\/tonsley\">Tonsley campus<\/a> houses state-of-the-art facilities \u2013 and centrally locates computer science, engineering and mathematics.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/medical-device-research-institute\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Medical Device Research Institute<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/institute-nanoscale-science-technology\">Centre for NanoScale Science Technology<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/innovation.sa.gov.au\/initiative\/tonsley-innovation-precinct\/\">Tonsley Innovation District<\/a> is home to some of Adelaide\u2019s biggest businesses and industries. It provides students the ability to engage with leading business enterprises \u2013 bringing real industry experiences and practice into the classroom.<\/p>\n<h4>No. 1 in SA in Engineering for learning resources and teaching quality (postgraduate) The Good Universities Guide 2020, public SA-founded universities only<\/h4>\n<p>Additionally, Tonsley hosts the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nviflinders.com.au\/about\/\">New Venture Institute<\/a>, an entrepreneurial incubator that has launched over 325 start ups.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love to come to Tonsley,\u201d says Daniel of his campus. \u201cThe facilities are magnificent and the building is almost brand new. In the meantime, he has taken subjects in <a href=\"https:\/\/students.flinders.edu.au\/my-course\/placements\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">work placement preparation<\/a>. \u201cIt helped me to re-create my resume and cover letter. I was also given information on opportunities that I can do for placement in the future,\u201d he says. As for longer-term career ambitions?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would like to work as a biomedical engineer who can develop and maintain medical devices. If it is possible, I would love to work with patients who need assistive technologies.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Advice for prospective international students?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cWhen it comes to the accomplishments of study, there is a lot of research going on so that you will able to get a great chance to participate with it,\u201d says Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you are looking for a friendly, welcoming environment, you should choose to study at Flinders,\u201d says Daniel of the community. \u201cThis semester was very tough \u2013 more so than a normal semester.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve been busy at Flinders University during the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/international\/2020\/06\/24\/an-update-from-flinders-international\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">COVID19 crisis.<\/a> Building a healthy online community is vital during this time, and the staff at Flinders International are dedicated to doing all they can to make students far from home, and those studying from home, feel part of the larger community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was my first semester here in Australia, and I saw their effort to go through this hard situation.
