\u201cFlinders University Academy will always be that first accessible stepping stone in my academic journey.\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Growing up in Cambodia, Sodanou has always been drawn to the world of health and science. With a natural interest in biology and a desire to build a meaningful career, she knew early on that working in healthcare was the right path for her. Today, she is studying her first year of a Bachelor of Nursing (Preregistration)<\/a> at Flinders University, following her completion of the Foundation Studies<\/a> program at Flinders University Academy – a one-year transition program designed to support international students in building the skills and confidence needed to progress into university study.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had always been interested in health and biology, so working as a healthcare professional was something I had always gravitated towards.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Sodanou, nursing quickly stood out not just as a career, but as one that could grow and evolve with her over time. The variety in the field and the ability to explore different specialties made it an exciting and practical choice.<\/p>\n

\u201cI chose nursing specifically because I enjoy the flexibility of lifestyle this job can offer, and the range of specialty that I can work with, whether that be L&D, paediatric, emergency, or even remote work-from-home jobs. I don\u2019t think I can get easily bored!\u201d<\/p>\n

Finding the Right Pathway to Study in Australia <\/strong><\/h3>\n

Like many international students, Sodanou\u2019s journey required thoughtful planning. After deciding to study in Australia, she chose Adelaide, a city that already felt familiar with family nearby, and began researching universities known for strong nursing programs.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause I knew that I wanted to study nursing, we narrowed our options down to Flinders University, one of the top rated in nursing education.\u201d<\/p>\n

Through this process, she discovered the Foundation Studies program at Flinders Academy \u2013 a pathway that would allow her to meet entry requirements and begin her journey with confidence.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was informed that since my high school curriculum was not accepted by the broad Australian system, I had to complete a pathway program first before commencing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rather than being setback, this became a strategic step forward. As a wholly owned part of Flinders University, the Academy offers students access to the same campus, facilities and learning environment, creating a seamless transition into their degree. The Foundation Studies program provided a structured and supportive entry into university life while immersing Sodanou in the same academic experience she would continue in her degree, helping her build the skills, confidence and familiarity needed to succeed.<\/p>\n

Building Confidence Through Flinders University Academy <\/strong><\/h3>\n

Transitioning into a new education system can be challenging, but Sodanou found that her time at Flinders Academy helped ease that shift. The program offered both academic preparation and an opportunity to adapt to university expectations in Australia.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe that FUA Foundation Studies program had helped me to get accustomed to Australian university life. It had also helped strengthen my academic skills through the range of topics taught.\u201d<\/p>\n

By the time she progressed to her nursing degree, she felt more confident, capable, and ready to take on the demands of university study.<\/p>\n

\u201cI also think that by being more confident in my ability, transitioning to my destination degree is a lot smoother.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Supportive Learning Environment <\/strong><\/h3>\n

A strong support system played an important role throughout her studies. From teaching staff to student services, the environment at Flinders Academy made it easier to stay focused and supported.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe teaching and Academy teams are all very supportive of me and the rest of the students throughout our study.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even without major challenges, having access to support created a sense of reassurance and stability.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs I did not encounter any particularly large hurdles during my study, the readily available support and services was enough for me to study without much troubles.\u201d<\/p>\n

Campus Life at Flinders University <\/strong><\/h3>\n

Set in the heart of Flinders University\u2019s Bedford Park campus, Flinders Academy offers something equally as valuable as academics: space to recharge, connect with nature, and enjoy sweeping views across the city and out to the coast.<\/p>\n

Starting her journey here meant Sodanou was already familiar with campus life as she progressed into her degree, making the transition feel natural and comfortable. For her, this became one of the most memorable parts of the experience.<\/p>\n

\u201cI like that I can take a walk and enjoy the amazing scenery the campus has to offer whenever I want.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI even spotted a handful of kangaroos and koalas during my little \u201cexcursions\u201d, so it felt like I am always near nature, which is always a plus.\u201d<\/p>\n

This balance between study and environment contributed to a more enjoyable and sustainable student lifestyle.<\/p>\n

Living in Adelaide as an International Student <\/strong><\/h3>\n

Choosing Adelaide proved to be a defining part of Sodanou\u2019s journey. Known for its affordability, lifestyle, and welcoming atmosphere, the city offered a smooth transition into life in Australia.<\/p>\n

\u201cLiving and studying in Adelaide had been one of the best choices I\u2019ve made in life.\u201d<\/p>\n

The city\u2019s blend of diversity and familiarity made it easier to settle in while also opening the door to new experiences.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt offers a diverse yet comfortable environment that fits well with my lifestyle and what I\u2019m used to.\u201d<\/p>\n

With access to nature and outdoor activities, Sodanou also discovered new interests outside of her studies.<\/p>\n

\u201cMoreover, the multitude of nature\u2019s available had been amazing as I had discovered a new hobby in hiking and exploration! Something that is very hard to get by coming from the city.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Sodanou, the experience at Flinders goes beyond academics. What makes the university unique is its culture, which is inclusive, diverse, and community focused.<\/p>\n

\u201cFlinders stand out because of its campus and university culture.\u201d<\/p>\n

The smaller campus size contributes to a more connected and personal student experience, where people from different backgrounds come together.<\/p>\n

\u201cHere you see a lot of students from diverse backgrounds and walk of life.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Future in Nursing <\/strong><\/h3>\n

Now in her first year of nursing, Sodanou is focused on building a career in healthcare, with ambitions to grow both professionally and academically.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn 5 years, I see myself as a registered nurse, maybe even considering furthering my education through a master degree if I want to come back to university.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her journey so far reflects the importance of taking the right first step, and for her, that step began at Flinders Academy.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut no matter where I end up, FUA will always be that first accessible stepping stone in my academic journey.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGo for it, studying abroad is an intimidating thing, but with the support and help you can get in Flinders, it won\u2019t be an impossible journey.\u201d<\/p>\n
