January – April ’25 Archive

The Jeff Bleich Centre has navigated a federal election, witnessed the ongoing effects of multiple rounds of Donald Trump’s tariffs, and welcomed back a dynamic cohort of JBC interns returning from Washington DC and from Vienna.

Federal Election Event 2025

As Australia geared up for the 2025 Federal Election, the Jeff Bleich Centre and the Australian Institute of International Affairs South Australia held an expert panel on Surviving Fragmentation: Geopolitics and the 2025 Australian Election. We thank everyone who attended the discussion and our stellar expert speakers Prof Rodrigo Praino, Leonard Blazeby and Dr Nathan Gray for sharing their insights.

Successful Completion of our 2025 Internships

Our 2025 cohort of interns have successfully completed their work experiences in Washington D.C. and Vienna.

We were delighted to observe our 2025 interns embrace the great opportunities of their experiences!

We have spotlighted their experiences on the JBC blog – check it out below!

100 Days of Trump Event

The JBC joined the American Chamber of Commerce in Australia in hosting an insightful breakfast assessing the first 100 days of the Trump presidency. Our experts – direct from Washington DC and from Adelaide – examined the key policies, economic shifts, and global implications of the new administration and its unprecedented number of executive orders.

We thank Professor Michael Gilding, Vice-President and Executive Dean of College of Business, Government and Law, for delivering the welcome address, and Emmy-award winning journalist Sara James (AmCham) for moderating the lively discussion. We further thank Professor Ruth Dassonneville, visiting the Flinders University from KU Leuven in Belgium, and Nerida King, joining us virtually from the Australian Strategic Policy Institute in Washington DC, for joining Professor Rodrigo Praino for this insightful conversation. Special thanks also to Sally Neville OAM (AmCham – SA), who made the event possible.

Senator Grogan Visits the JBC

We had the pleasure of hosting Senator Karen Grogan at the Jeff Bleich Centre earlier this year. As part of her visit, Senator Grogan discussed the purpose of the Centre and the work of the Australian Government to tackle disinformation and misinformation. The conversation is part of our “Expert Voices” series and is now available on our Youtube channel!

Flinders University Visits ESPI

In April, Professor Michael Gilding, together with Professor Christopher Kee and Associate Professor Angie Shafei visited the European Space Policy Institute (ESPI) in Vienna (Austria).

The Jeff Bleich Centre maintains a strong relationship with ESPI, and we are proud of our ongoing research collaborations, and our one-of-a-kind in Australia Vienna Space Internship!

Aus Space 25 Sydney

Professor Rodrigo Praino participated in Space Connect’s Australian Space Summit and Exhibition AusSpace 25 in Sydney. The panel discussion with Doug Abdiel (Advanced Navigation), Mark Ramsey (Space Machines Company) and Dan Lloyd (Space Industry Association of Australia), moderated by Professor Alan Duffy (Swinburne) was centred on international collaborations, with a particular focus on AUKUS.
