{"id":4356,"date":"2018-08-03T14:24:13","date_gmt":"2018-08-03T04:54:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/libinfo\/?p=4356"},"modified":"2018-08-03T15:43:41","modified_gmt":"2018-08-03T06:13:41","slug":"4356","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/libinfo\/2018\/08\/03\/4356\/","title":{"rendered":"PHCA9509 Public Health Practice Development"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Subject:<\/strong> Public Health Practice Development<\/p>\n<p><strong>FLO topic code:<\/strong> PHCA9509<\/p>\n<p><strong>Student level: <\/strong>Masters<\/p>\n<p><strong>Assignment type: <\/strong>2 options<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pathway 1 = placement, where students reflect on practice<\/li>\n<li>Pathway 2 = literature review<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Students in Pathway 1 need to find some literature on their area of practice and maybe information about reflective practice.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Students in Pathway 2 need to undertake a narrative review based on a systematic search.The topic coordinator expects them to use a range of sources, including grey literature as appropriate to their topic, and while they do not need to do an exhaustive search, she advised they use 3-4 databases.<\/p>\n<p>The Teaching and Learning Librarians will see the students on two occasions.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the students had a lecture where they were given some general advice about searching for literature. This included<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>an overview of a broad literature search strategy<\/li>\n<li>thinking about what information they need, what form it would take (i.e. what type of resource it would end up in), who would produce it and where it can be found (free online v library catalogue or commercial databases), and how that database can be searched<\/li>\n<li>basic strategies for devising a search &#8211; developing a focused question using a framework such as PICO, identifying keywords and synonyms, basic search functionality<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Students will be given a worksheet to help them think through these ideas in relation to their own research. In a fortnight&#8217;s time, we will meet again for 2 hours where students will be able to work on their own research and get advice.
