Explain why it is of interest to them (personal reflection, connections to your current or future professional context) and to the field of FL education (importance as identified in the literature).” They need to then “discuss why and how a deeper understanding of this issue can improve students learning.”

They need to use at least 8 peer reviewed journal articles that are relevant to their selected FL teaching/learning with new technologies issue. At least 5 of which must be recently published (2009-2019). They are encouraged to also draw from professional teaching magazines and grey literature (where appropriate – e.g. govt reports, policies, statistics).

What we went through with them

During the first half of the workshop, we discussed the different parts of the question for assignment 3 (as detailed above) and gave students time to work through this Worksheet , which got them to identify specific things they wanted to focus on (e.g. which new technology, what their professional context is, which pedagogical model, etc.). We then discussed:

strategies for figuring out what to focus on (e.g. thinking about their own experiences, talking to their teacher and other students, doing some background reading or scoping searches),

the fact that it would be very unlikely that they would find any source that talks about all aspects of their question – so when they search for information they may need to look for sources on different aspects or combinations in separate searches.

We then went through good sources of information – in particular, books and readings (for background info), research articles, and professional teaching magazines – and spoke in general terms about where to search for them. Students came up with a list of databases they commonly use, which included FindIt, Google Scholar, ProQuest, Taylor and Francis. We showed them the list from the LTI in FLO.

We quickly demonstrated putting a search together in ProQuest and highlighted things like:

using AND, OR, and phrase searching

looking at the list of books displayed on the right of the results – may be good for background info

looking at relevant results for further clues – e.g. references, subject headings, words used in the abstract, cited by, etc.

finding the full-text (including that they have access to Document delivery)

grabbing citation details

pushing to EndNote (most students indicated that they use EndNote)

Considerations for Library Services

There is an LTI embedded in their FLO page called ‘Library Resource Guide’ (in the top box).

Readings and textbooks should be really useful for these students, as they may need to refer to learning models and pedagogical theories.

Students need to focus on their own professional context. For many of these students, this will be within another country. We spent a bit of time talking about how they may not find information directly related to their specific country (or type of school or role they are in), so they may need to look at comparative or broader examples.

Articles from professional teaching magazines are not always indexed in databases. Instead, students may have to rely on their own access to specific publications through their workplace or professional association.

Kind regards,
Teaching and Learning Librarian team

Subject: EDUC9708 New technologies and e-pedagogy in foreign language education Student level: Masters Offering: Internal and online Library session held: Wednesday 4 September What students have […]

[1

post-5012","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorised
["GET
