{"id":1052,"date":"2019-11-08T16:02:40","date_gmt":"2019-11-08T06:32:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mdri-news\/?p=1052"},"modified":"2019-11-19T15:41:30","modified_gmt":"2019-11-19T06:11:30","slug":"next-gen-medical-implants-focus-of-new-centre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mdri-news\/2019\/11\/08\/next-gen-medical-implants-focus-of-new-centre\/","title":{"rendered":"Next-gen medical implants focus of new centre"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_1053\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1053\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1053\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mdri-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2019\/11\/Mark-Taylor-MDRI-300x220.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mdri-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2019\/11\/Mark-Taylor-MDRI-300x220.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mdri-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2019\/11\/Mark-Taylor-MDRI-768x563.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mdri-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2019\/11\/Mark-Taylor-MDRI-1024x750.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mdri-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2019\/11\/Mark-Taylor-MDRI.jpg 1467w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1053\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The new ARC CMIT will create a series of PhD research positions to join an innovative team at Flinders led by Strategic Professor of Biomedical Engineering Professor Mark Taylor, left.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Global experts from Flinders University biomedical engineering will join the new ARC Training Centre for Medical Implant Technologies.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian Research Council Training <a href=\"http:\/\/cmit.arc.edu.au\">Centre for Medical Implant Technologies<\/a> (ARC CMIT) aims to support research translation which leads to the development of best industry and clinical practice, new products, processes and solutions.<\/p>\n<p>The new centre\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mdri-news\/2018\/08\/07\/bone-implants-poised-hi-tech-overhaul\/\">will specialise in personalised orthopaedic and maxillofacial solutions<\/a>\u00a0and provide training for PhD students and early career researchers to engage with industry and clinical partners.<\/p>\n<p>Flinders University\u2019s Strategic Professor of Biomedical Engineering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/people\/mark.taylor\">Mark Taylor<\/a>, says Flinders University is one of four research nodes of the ARC CMIT, led by The University of Melbourne, with Griffith University and Epworth HealthCare.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Flinders Medical Device Research Institute is a leader in computational and experimental biomechanics, working closely with industry and other research organisations in the development of personalised models, virtual clinical trials and decision support,\u201d says CMIT program leader Professor Taylor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are pleased to be a partner in the ARC CMIT, to share our expertise and develop the next generation of experts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Professor Taylor and other MDRI researchers are pioneering the development and application of tools that are capable of accounting for patient and surgical variability, providing greater understanding of the performance of an implant, which ultimately leads to safer implants with improved longevity. These techniques form the basis for virtual clinical trials.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"About the ARC Centre for Medical Implant Technology (CMIT)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BzW-wpFlb68?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe MDRI has strong links to industry and the clinical community and strive to provide a supportive, encouraging environment for our PhD students and early career researchers so this really is a great fit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ARC CMIT will provide more opportunities to make a positive impact on the industry, and we look forward to working with our partners to see this come to fruition\u201d, says Professor Taylor.<\/p>\n<p>Flinders University\u2019s Medical Device Research Institute (MDRI) will employ\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/study\/courses\/postgraduate-engineering-biomedical\">one post-doc and offer five PhD stipends<\/a>\u00a0under the ARC CMIT.<\/p>\n<p>ARC CMIT director Professor Peter Lee, from the Melbourne University School of Engineering, says the centre brings together 18 partners including biomedical engineers, scientists from various disciplines and clinicians \u2013 including early career researchers and PhDs \u2013 with government, hospital and medical implant global supply chain providers to create world\u2019s best practices and implant solutions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe training centre will equip a new generation of engineers to work with clinicians, to have a good understanding of regulations and gain experience in entrepreneurship and innovation,\u201d Professor Lee says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCompared to other Australian industries, med-tech is young, so the opportunity for research and development is great.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCMIT is one of the largest partnerships of industry, hospitals and universities; an ideal environment for training.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gold Coast Orthopaedic Research and Education Alliance director Professor David Lloyd is program leader from the Griffith University and Professor Nik Zeps is CMIT program leader from Epworth HealthCare.<\/p>\n<p>CMIT is funded by to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arc.gov.au\/grants\/linkage-program\/industrial-transformation-research-program\">ARC Industrial Transformation Research Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Global experts from Flinders University biomedical engineering will join the new ARC Training Centre for Medical Implant Technologies.
