{"id":288,"date":"2013-08-23T11:41:37","date_gmt":"2013-08-23T02:11:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mdri-news\/?p=288"},"modified":"2013-08-23T11:41:37","modified_gmt":"2013-08-23T02:11:37","slug":"virtual-art-program-takes-world-stage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mdri-news\/2013\/08\/23\/virtual-art-program-takes-world-stage\/","title":{"rendered":"Virtual art program takes world stage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[vimeo]http:\/\/vimeo.com\/71421813[\/vimeo] A Flinders University-made platform that enables children with disabilities to create their own artworks will be showcased at an international convention in Korea next week.<\/p>\n<p>The Kinect Virtual Art Program \u2013 developed by Biomedical Engineering honours graduate Laura Diment \u2013 has won a place in the 2013 Student Design Challenge. The challenge is part of the International Convention on Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.icreateasia.org\/\">i-CREATe<\/a>), which will be held in Gyeonggi, Korea, from August 29-31.<\/p>\n<p>Using Microsoft Kinect software, a tool which senses and tracks movements, the Kinect Virtual Art Program (KVAP) allows users to create artworks simply by moving their limbs.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Diment  (demonstrating the KVAP in the above video) began designing the program as part of her third-year work placement with the Bloorview Research Institute in Toronto, Canada, in 2011, before running a pilot study with five children with severe disabilities during her honours in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>She said feedback from the study was \u201cextremely positive\u201d, with the results showing that the KVAP was a fun, engaging and easy to use children\u2019s leisure activity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArt plays a vital role in child development and provides a valuable leisure opportunity but a lot of children with severe impairments aren\u2019t able to engage in art or many other recreational activities due to limited dexterity and grip strength,\u201d Mrs Diment said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe KVAP was intentionally designed without rules, instructions or time limits to encourage creative experimentation and exploration, both on a cognitive and physical level,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis modality provides a means for children, whose participation in art activities has been otherwise limited, to express themselves freely and creatively through art.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Diment, now a research associate with the University-based <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/mdpp\/\">Medical Device Partnering Program<\/a>, said the KVAP could potentially be used as a form of rehabilitative therapy for people with disabilities, particularly children who lack fine motor control or muscle strength.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was originally designed as a leisure activity and to encourage creativity but it could be quite useful in analysing a child\u2019s progress because it tracks 3D information, including the range of movements and speed and direction of the limbs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor example, physiotherapists could use the information to see what limb the child is favouring and tailor a program to encourage more movement from their weaker areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Diment\u2019s paper on the KVAP \u2013 A Gesture-based Virtual Art Program for Children with Severe Motor Impairments: Development and Pilot Study \u2013 was also accepted as a conference paper and will be presented at i-CREATe.<\/p>\n<p>She said it was an honour to showcase her program on the world stage: \u201cIt\u2019s the first time I\u2019ve presented at a conference, let alone an international conference, so it\u2019s very exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Article written by Emily Charrison, Flinders University<\/em><\/p>\n<p>[youtube]http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=r3yPnZMdmVo&amp;feature=c4-overview-vl&amp;list=PL19B5B9E422D3EA4C[\/youtube]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[vimeo]http:\/\/vimeo.com\/71421813[\/vimeo] A Flinders University-made platform that enables children with disabilities to create their own artworks will be showcased at an international convention in Korea next week.
