{"id":574,"date":"2015-03-13T15:50:45","date_gmt":"2015-03-13T06:20:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mdri-news\/?p=574"},"modified":"2015-03-13T15:50:45","modified_gmt":"2015-03-13T06:20:45","slug":"tonsley-to-bring-new-medical-technology-to-the-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mdri-news\/2015\/03\/13\/tonsley-to-bring-new-medical-technology-to-the-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Tonsley to bring new medical technology to the world"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mdri-news\/files\/2015\/03\/120802_DET_SCI_REYNOLDS_0025_cropped1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mdri-news\/files\/2015\/03\/120802_DET_SCI_REYNOLDS_0025_cropped1-283x300.jpg\" alt=\"120802_DET_SCI_REYNOLDS_0025_cropped1\" width=\"283\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-577\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mdri-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2015\/03\/120802_DET_SCI_REYNOLDS_0025_cropped1-283x300.jpg 283w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mdri-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2015\/03\/120802_DET_SCI_REYNOLDS_0025_cropped1.jpg 368w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 283px) 100vw, 283px\" \/><\/a>Flinders University plans to become a world leader in medical technologies and assisted living research and development with its new $120 million Flinders at Tonsley precinct. <\/p>\n<p>The director of the University\u2019s Medical Device Research Institute (MDRI), Professor Karen Reynolds, said Flinders at Tonsley provided \u201cenormous scope\u201d for the university\u2019s centres of expertise to work alongside industry partners to develop, harness and direct technologies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFlinders at Tonsley also allows us to connect with the community, focus our research in areas of priority and create smart, high tech industry that will provide the jobs of the future,\u201d said Professor Reynolds, an acclaimed biomedical engineer.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cOur collaborative approach also allows for the development and delivery of innovative solutions and services in the health sector.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the MDRI, the six-storey state-of-the-art Flinders at Tonsley building also houses the University\u2019s School of Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics and the Centre for NanoScale Science and Technology, alongside some of Adelaide\u2019s key businesses, bridging the gap between research and industry.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Reynolds said that building on the strengths of the Institute\u2019s highly successful Medical Device Partnering Program (MDPP), Flinders at Tonsley would allow the Institute to foster greater collaboration between researchers, industry and end-users to ensure clinical relevance and improved patient outcomes for industry-based projects.<\/p>\n<p>She said this was increasingly important with Australia\u2019s ageing population and higher expectations of quality of life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an exciting time to work within the medical device and assisted living space, particularly in South Australia with Tonsley as a health innovation precinct,\u201d Professor Reynolds said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs an integral partner in the Tonsley development, we have the opportunity to influence, grow and lead this sector to national excellence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am privileged to be surrounded by talented and inspirational researchers who are making significant contributions to society, from developing new methods for breast cancer detection to creating assistive living devices to enable people to live in their own homes for longer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCollaboration and innovation has always been at the heart of what we do.
