{"id":811,"date":"2016-06-21T17:18:43","date_gmt":"2016-06-21T07:48:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mdri-news\/?p=811"},"modified":"2016-06-21T17:18:43","modified_gmt":"2016-06-21T07:48:43","slug":"visual-supports-for-autistic-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mdri-news\/2016\/06\/21\/visual-supports-for-autistic-children\/","title":{"rendered":"Visual supports for autistic children"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[article by Office of Communication and Engagement, Flinders University]<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_812\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-812\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mdri-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2016\/06\/Pammi-and-Ralf-Schlosser-15-June-300x222.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-812\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-812\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mdri-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2016\/06\/Pammi-and-Ralf-Schlosser-15-June-300x222-300x222.jpg\" alt=\"Associate Professor Pammi Raghavendra with Professor Ralf Schlosser at Flinders Bedford Park this week\" width=\"300\" height=\"222\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-812\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Associate Professor Pammi Raghavendra with Professor Ralf Schlosser at Flinders Bedford Park this week<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The use of progressive visual\u00a0support for\u00a0children with autism who are minimally verbal\u00a0was explained in workshops at Flinders University\u00a0this week.<\/p>\n<p>Visiting international researcher Professor Ralf Schlosser, from Northeastern University &amp; Boston Children\u2019s Hospital in the US, gave several\u00a0workshops to students and staff and a public lecture at Flinders at Victoria Square Adelaide on 15 June.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of our minimally verbal kids aren\u2019t doing very well in classrooms, where instructions are usually all verbal,\u201d Professor Schlosser says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith both dynamic (video clips) and static (pictures and graphic symbols) visual cues, there can be many benefits for those who don\u2019t do very well with the spoken language.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The latest\u00a0mobile-based technologies,\u00a0phone apps, and general consumer-level devices such as iPads, Apple Watch and the Amazon Echo,\u00a0offer a\u00a0new range of options for creating rich visual environments and \u201cjust-in-time\u201d (JIT) supports, he says.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Schlosser is an author of a new book covering emerging Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) techniques, called <em>Enhancing Communications for Individuals with Autism \u2013 A Guide to the Visual Immersion System <\/em>(VIS).<\/p>\n<p>VIS is described as \u201ca practical, research-based intervention framework that taps into the strong visual processing skills of many children on the autism spectrum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Associate Professor Pammi Raghavendra from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/sohs\/\">School of Health Sciences<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/sohs\/sites\/disability-studies\/\">Disability and Community Inclusion Unit<\/a>, said Professor Schlosser\u2019s approach is \u201cnovel and exciting\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProfessor Schlosser\u2019s research in using commercially available, wearable and easily usable mobile technologies for supporting students with autism\u00a0to enhance communication and ability to understand spoken language,\u201d Associate Professor Raghavendra said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFlinders students in various disciplines such as teaching, disability and developmental education, speech pathology, etc. would also benefit from learning about these innovative approaches.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said the research seminar and master class were very informative.
