{"id":929,"date":"2017-08-14T09:00:33","date_gmt":"2017-08-13T23:30:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mdri-news\/?p=929"},"modified":"2017-08-16T09:01:05","modified_gmt":"2017-08-15T23:31:05","slug":"turning-up-the-heat-on-surgery-related-hypothermia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mdri-news\/2017\/08\/14\/turning-up-the-heat-on-surgery-related-hypothermia\/","title":{"rendered":"Turning up the heat on surgery-related hypothermia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><figure id=\"attachment_931\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-931\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mdri-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2017\/08\/Flinders-MDPP-handover_small.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" class=\"size-full wp-image-931\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mdri-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2017\/08\/Flinders-MDPP-handover_small.jpg 500w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mdri-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2017\/08\/Flinders-MDPP-handover_small-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-931\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The MDPP team pose with the FloTherm prototype, L-R: Professor Karen Reynolds, Dr Melissa Ryan, Dr Aaron Mohtar, Dr Peter Santa Maria (client) and Ms Aisha Sirop<\/figcaption><\/figure>Blood clots, infections, heart attacks and the spiralling financial costs associated with surgery-related hypothermia could be reduced thanks to a leap forward in the technology used to prevent it.<\/p>\n<p>It may not be the most well-known surgical complication, but hypothermia affects more than 30% of patients undergoing major surgery.<\/p>\n<p>It also costs the healthcare sector tens of millions of dollars.<\/p>\n<p>The adverse effects of surgery-related hypothermia prompted Australian surgeon Dr Peter Santa Maria to invent a new device called \u2018FloTherm\u2019, which gently heats the soles of the feet and behind the knees to warm blood circulating around the body during surgery.<\/p>\n<p>The device not only reduces the risk of hypothermia, but also gives surgeons better access to other parts of the body, as the feet are far away from the site of most surgeries.<\/p>\n<p>FloTherm was developed at Stanford University with assistance from Flinders University\u2019s Medical Device Partnering Program (MDPP) and in cooperation with two Stanford engineers, Brian Kannard and Abhinav Ramani.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe current standard of care for warming patients during surgery is fine for surgery on limbs, but when the surgery is on the thorax or abdomen it\u2019s not terribly effective \u2013 in fact, these kinds of surgeries have a 50\u201360% hypothermia rate,\u201d said Dr Santa Maria.<\/p>\n<p>After returning to the University of Western Australia, Dr Santa Maria founded FloTherm Australia.<\/p>\n<p>FloTherm has been shown to be safe and effective in a breast surgery study at Stanford University in the United States, and will undergo further trials before manufacturing begins.<br \/>\n\u201cThe MDPP brought electronics expertise to the table that accelerated the development of FloTherm, which in turn has meant that we can get this technology to market much sooner,\u201d said Dr Santa Maria.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Santa Maria is looking to have FloTherm manufactured in South Australia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrior to working with the MDPP, we hadn\u2019t considered manufacturing in Australia, much less in South Australia,\u201d said Dr Santa Maria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe MDPP helped make us aware of the opportunities here and connected us to the right people\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Key Tubing &amp; Electrical, a South Australian manufacturer with a long history of producing heating elements for the car industry, has since offered the perfect manufacturing solution for FloTherm, underscoring the competitiveness and agility of South Australian manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p>Director of the MDPP, Professor Karen Reynolds, said that the FloTherm project represented a true international collaboration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFloTherm ticks all of the boxes \u2013 it improves patient safety, reduces costs to our health system, and, in a win for the South Australian economy, is slated to be manufactured right here\u201d, said Professor Reynolds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been very pleased to work with Dr Santa Maria on FloTherm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur biomedical engineers have developed a control system for the product to safely operate its heating pads.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re excited to have been able to connect Dr Santa Maria with Key Tubing &amp; Electrical &#8211; their assistance on this project is a great demonstration of how agile and competitive our local manufacturers can be.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy accelerating the development of new medical devices, the MDPP both improves health outcomes and creates new opportunities for South Australia\u2019s manufacturing industry,\u201d said Professor Reynolds<\/p>\n<p><strong>Background<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Medical Device Partnering Program at Flinders University is funded by the State Government\u2019s Medical Technologies Program. It is an innovative model for collaboration between inventors, researchers, end-users and commercial partners.<\/p>\n<p>It brings medical innovators together with leading biomedical engineers, providing them with 250 hours of research and development assistance, as well as market intelligence.
