{"id":962,"date":"2018-01-24T13:57:36","date_gmt":"2018-01-24T04:27:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mdri-news\/?p=962"},"modified":"2018-01-24T14:02:19","modified_gmt":"2018-01-24T04:32:19","slug":"shining-light-for-flinders-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mdri-news\/2018\/01\/24\/shining-light-for-flinders-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Shining light on Flinders research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><figure id=\"attachment_965\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-965\" style=\"width: 249px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mdri-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2018\/01\/John-Arkwright-249x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"249\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-965\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mdri-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2018\/01\/John-Arkwright-249x300.jpg 249w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mdri-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2018\/01\/John-Arkwright-768x926.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mdri-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2018\/01\/John-Arkwright-849x1024.jpg 849w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mdri-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2018\/01\/John-Arkwright.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 249px) 100vw, 249px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-965\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Flinders Professor John Arkwright<\/figcaption><\/figure>Flinders Professor John Arkwright will fly to San Francisco today (24 Jan) to participate in <a href=\"http:\/\/spie.org\/conferences-and-exhibitions\/photonics-west\/?SSO=1\">Photonics West<\/a>, the world\u2019s largest photonics technologies event. <\/p>\n<p>Selected by the conference organisers for his specialist knowledge in the field, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/people\/John.Arkwright\">Professor Arkwright <\/a>is one of two instructors who will facilitate a SPIE short-course on <em>Biomedical Applications of Specialty Optical Fibers and Fiber Sensors <\/em>on 29 January 2018. <\/p>\n<p>Together with co-instructor Alexis Mendez, MCH Engineering LLC (United States), John will share his knowledge on optical fibre sensing principles and techniques for biological and medical applications. <\/p>\n<p>The course will also highlight generic uses of specialty optical fibres for biomedical devices and instruments. <\/p>\n<p>Professor Arkwright will then present his own research at the Photonics West Conference with fellow Flinders staff member and Mechanical Engineer, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/people\/anthony.papageorgiou\">Anthony Papageorgiou <\/a>also presenting a paper.<\/p>\n<p>A team from Flinders, SA Photonics, UniSA and Adelaide University will co-share a booth to showcase South Australia\u2019s expertise in the field. <\/p>\n<p>Whilst in the US, Professor Arkwright will visit colleagues at Stanford University and the Boeing flight test center in Seattle. <\/p>\n<p>The South Australian Premier\u2019s Professorial Research Fellow in Biomedical Engineering has received a number of accolades in recent years for his ground-breaking work, using fibre optic catheters for in-vivo diagnostics. <\/p>\n<p>Joining the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/science_engineering\/research\/mdri\/\">Flinders Medical Device Research Institute <\/a>in 2014, Professor Arkwright and colleague Associate Professor Phil Dinning led a multi-disciplinary team to win the prestigious Sir William Hudson Award for Engineering Excellence for the development of a novel manometry (pressure-sensing) catheter at the 2014 Australian Engineering Excellence Awards.<\/p>\n<p>This award followed the team\u2019s earlier success winning the 2011 ANSTO Eureka Prize for Innovative Use in Technology.<\/p>\n<p>On his return to Australia, Professor Arkwright will head to Melbourne where he has been invited to Present at the <a href=\"http:\/\/uip2018.com\/\">World Congress of Phlebology <\/a>(4-8 Feb), to share his research on new tape sensors for compression pressure measurement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Flinders Professor John Arkwright will fly to San Francisco today (24 Jan) to participate in Photonics West, the world\u2019s largest photonics technologies event.
