Get to know your College: Daniel Sparrow

Daniel Sparrow, Contracts Officer (partnered with the College)

This is a big campus isn’t it? I was a student here so thankfully I’m back in surroundings that are familiar to me! I studied a Bachelor of Laws and Legal Practice here, graduating with distinction in 2017. For a considerable part of my degree, the new Hub and food areas were under construction. As such, the massive development of these areas is the largest change by far. Campus life looks pretty comfortable thesedays!

Did you ever think you’d be back here as a staff member? Ha, no this hadn’t really occurred to me. OK, to be completely honest, this was entirely unplanned. Now that I am though, it does make a lot of sense: Flinders instils in you certain values, a sense of professional responsibility, and a true sense of community. It’s been quite amazing that, in my Flinders career of two weeks, how many other staff members I’ve met who also graduated from here – surely that counts for something?

Also, it feels good to be a staff member here – the systems are in place to ensure that I’ve been able to settle in easily and, basically, I’m already doing modelling shoots for this flagship publication! The opportunities are boundless.

Where have you come from and what are you doing: I’ve been based in Jamestown in the mid-North region of SA, working as a solicitor. I’ve loved working in a rural area but the opportunity to return home to a challenging job was too tempting. I’ve really just moved back and can’t wait for my wife and dog to join me soon and we can set-up home at our house in the country.

So, I work as a contracts officer. Basically, this includes reading a lot of fine print and drafting agreements. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but the nuances of preparing contracts really appeal to me: my role is to negotiate, evaluate, mitigate risk and develop agreements that allow staff to get on with the job with adequate protection against legal and liability issues.

What’s something about you that others may not know? Others here at the University? Probably almost everything! Seriously though, I am an avid gardener, with a particular passion for growing foods organically and sustainably.
