CMPH 3 Minute Thesis winners announced

Last Wednesday, the Health and Medical Research Building hosted a combined 3 Minute Thesis (3MT®) heat for CMPH and CNHS. Attendees were presented with research topics ranging from ‘Cultural Influence on End-of-Life Decision Making in Japan’ to ‘We Are What We Eat: Does a Growing Waistline Equal a Growing Bowel Cancer Risk?’.

The 3MT competition celebrates the exciting research conducted by PhD students worldwide. Developed by The University of Queensland (UQ), the competition cultivates students’ academic, presentation, and research communication skills. Presenting in a 3MT competition increases their capacity to effectively explain their research in three minutes, using language appropriate for a non-specialist audience. Competitors are allowed one PowerPoint slide but no other resources or props.

College judges for the event were Dr. Joshua Trigg, Associate Professor Savio (George) Barreto, and Dr. Kirrilly Thompson. After careful deliberation, the judges selected the following students to represent CMPH at the University Semi-Final:

  • Winner: Olivia Burling – “Say Cheese! Taking Better Photos of Cancer”
  • Runner-Up: Anna McMillen – “The Role of Dopamine in Forgetting”

We encourage everyone to come and support Olivia and Anna as they represent the College at the University Semi-Final on 12th August, from 2-4 pm, at HSTLC 1.01 (or online).

The top eight presenters from this round will be able to compete again in the University Final on 26th August, from 2:30-4 pm, at HSTLC 1.01 (or online).
