Hands-On: NT Medical Students Get a Taste of Surgery

The 2025 Suture Night, hosted by the Northern Territory Student Surgical Group (NTSSG), brought together 40 medical students in Darwin this March for an evening of surgical skill-building and career inspiration.

Designed to promote surgery as a career pathway and enhance surgical education at the medical school level, the event welcomed students from first year through to final year. NTSSG members ran the evening, with hands-on guidance from ENT and General Surgery registrars.

Participants rotated through practical stations to practice suturing, hand-tying, and wound management.

The night kicked off with an engaging lecture by Dr Dayna Duncan, Medical Education Registrar, who offered insight into the surgical field and shared practical advice with students considering a surgical career.

Participants then rotated through practical stations where they learned the fundamentals of suturing, hand-tying, and wound management. These sessions gave students a chance to build confidence with essential techniques in a supportive, small-group setting.

The event created a valuable space for students to connect with clinicians

Beyond the skills training, the event created a valuable space for students to connect with clinicians. It provided a chance to ask questions, hear about different surgical experiences, and gain a clearer understanding of the pathways into a surgical career.

Suture Night continues to grow as a highlight in the NT medical student calendar, offering both practical learning and meaningful career guidance.
