She was fortunate to have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/people\/liufei.tan\">Dr Liu-Fei Tan<\/a> as a topic coordinator who provided a well-balanced approach to learning, with a focus on both theory and practical application.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c&#8230;even after completing my Bachelors degree, the Course Coordinator was very supportive during my honours and always makes sure to forward emails to their students for different scholarships and learning opportunities.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>One such opportunity was a Summer Research Scholarship with Dr Bart Eijkelkamp in 2021, which gave her the chance to lead her own mini-project.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe Summer Research Scholarship was my first experience in a lab outside of structured practicals in topics. The experience leading my own project gave me the confidence to undertake a placement in my final semester of medical science with the <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eijkelkamplab.com\/\"><em>Eijkelkamp lab<\/em><\/a><em>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This experience, along with the placement topic in her final semester, confirmed her decision to pursue an Honours year in science, before starting her PhD.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1355\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mph-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/79\/2023\/03\/ella-pic-2crop-1024x631.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mph-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/79\/2023\/03\/ella-pic-2crop-1024x631.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mph-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/79\/2023\/03\/ella-pic-2crop-300x185.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mph-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/79\/2023\/03\/ella-pic-2crop-768x474.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mph-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/79\/2023\/03\/ella-pic-2crop.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ella&#8217;s advice&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For other students who may be passionate about science or interested in biotechnology, Ella\u2019s advice is to read up on the literature and gain hands-on experience through laboratory placements.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI<\/em><em>t is never too early to read up on the literature surrounding your field of interest and explore which labs here at Flinders are leading research in that area. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Keep your options open. Throughout your undergraduate degree, you will discover new areas of research you may have never known existed before.
