From an early age, Mariya Francis has been captivated by the possibilities within the field of biotechnology<\/a>. Now, as a student in the Master of Biotechnology<\/a> program at Flinders University, she is turning her passion into a promising career.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/i>Mariya, who previously studied in her home country, is now immersed in Flinders’ comprehensive and dynamic Master of Biotechnology<\/a>. This two-year coursework-based program offers practical sessions in industrial and pharmaceutical biotechnology, molecular biotechnology, nanobiotechnology, genetics, medical biotechnology, bioinformatics, and more. Additionally, students engage in a nine-month research project, allowing them to delve into specialised areas such as biomedical research, cancer research, microbiology, and industrial biotechnology.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For Mariya, the scope of biotechnology<\/a> in improving the quality of human life is a significant motivator.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“Biotechnology plays a crucial role in various fields including food, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and medicine.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span>From the yoghurt or cheese we have in the refrigerator to the antibiotics like penicillin we take to fight infections, biotechnology’s contributions are commendable.”<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Flinders University stood out to Mariya for several reasons.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“The emphasis on laboratory skills, the 9-month research project, and the coverage of all major aspects of biotechnology were key factors.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span>The course also highlighted the importance of transferrable skills, which can be utilised in various fields.”<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Reflecting on her educational journey, Mariya highlights the value of presentations and seminars in building her confidence.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“In the first year, I used to give presentations for 2 or 3 minutes. By the second year, I was confidently presenting for 10 to 15 minutes.”\u00a0<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“Assignments like debates for the LESAB (Legal, Ethical, and Social Aspects of Bioscience)<\/a> topic and business plan presentations for bio-business help enhance presentation skills and understand the content deeply.”<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The practical sessions within the course have been instrumental in Mariya’s development.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“Experiments like beer preparation in industrial biotech, hydrogel formation in nanobiotech, and ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) and cell culture in medical biotech are fascinating.”\u00a0<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/i>These experiences, combined with the research project, have helped her become independent and confident in conducting experiments. After completing her degree, Mariya aspires to work in the pharmaceutical industry, particularly in cell therapy, vaccine development, and gene therapy.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“I want to contribute to the development of a therapeutic agent to improve human life.” <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Finally, Mariya offers heartfelt advice to prospective students:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“Flinders University is a great place to nourish and flourish. The teaching staff in the biotech department are helpful, understanding, and approachable. The campus is beautiful, and the support services for international students are excellent. It\u2019s worth giving a try!”<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
