Nicola Liapis, a second-year <\/b>Flinders University Paramedicine<\/b><\/a> student, is on a mission to make a difference in emergency medicine. Her path began with <\/b>Flinders’ Foundation Studies program<\/b><\/a>, followed by a year in the <\/b>Bachelor of Nursing<\/b><\/a>, before transferring to the <\/b>Bachelor of Paramedicine<\/b><\/a>. Her dedication is fueled by a deeply personal motivation to give back to the community, mirroring the lifesaving impact that emergency services had on her family decades ago.<\/b><\/p>\n “My grandfather survived a horrific car accident in the 90s, suffering two traumatic cardiac arrests and was in a coma for nearly twenty days. He truly is a miracle. A big part of why I do what I do is in hope that I can do what the emergency services did for my grandfather, even once.”<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Nicola’s journey to becoming a paramedic began with <\/span>Flinders’ Foundation Studies program<\/span><\/a>, (a university bridging program) which offered her a second chance to achieve her dreams of higher education after being forced to leave high school early.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n “I had health issues in high school and had to leave early, which devastated me. University had always been a big dream. Discovering <\/span><\/i>Flinders’ Foundation Studies program<\/span><\/i><\/a> was like a second chance. It seemed too good to be true – I applied the same day I found out about it.”<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Following a year in the <\/span>Bachelor of Nursing<\/span><\/a>, Nicola transferred to the <\/span>Bachelor of Paramedicine<\/span><\/a>. Flinders University not only provided Nicola with the education and skills she needed but also connected her with incredible people and opportunities, making her journey both rewarding and transformative.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Reflecting on her learning experience, Nicola highlights the importance of hands-on practice in simulation rooms.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n “These dedicated clinical skill study spaces are the best. Practising with real equipment until its muscle memory has been so beneficial.”<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Practical lessons and placements have significantly contributed to Nicola’s development as a paramedic. She cherishes the moments of being able to support and comfort individuals during their most challenging times.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n “It\u2019s an honour to be beside someone on the worst day of their life.”<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Nicola also values the peer mentor program at Flinders, which pairs third-year students with first-year students, providing invaluable guidance, support, and insights into the field of paramedicine.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n “My mentor has been an absolute gem, going above and beyond to help us out. Despite the program officially lasting six weeks, my mentor continued to offer advice, answer questions, and provide encouragement throughout the year. This support has been crucial in navigating the challenges of the course and building my confidence as an aspiring paramedic.”<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Nicola’s aspirations are clear and ambitious.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n “I love emergency medicine and aim to become an intensive care paramedic. If I switch back to nursing or pursue medicine, I could see myself in the emergency department or retrieval medicine with MedSTAR or the Royal Flying Doctor Service.”<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Nicola encourages prospective students with a passion for paramedicine to consider Flinders.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n “Flinders has incredible academic, health, and wellbeing supports.
